Why no G5 aftermarket upgrade after all this time?
I have the orginial G5 1.6 PM and would love to be able to keep it for a few more year before I switch to the new Mactel PM(MacBook is another story
), I have been waiting and waiting for either a fast single core 2.5? 3ghz G5 upgrade or if miracle happen, a dualcore G5 kit.
But as of now, I don't seem to hear any news or product announcement from any of the traditional cpu upgrade aftermaret company? what is the deal with that?

Cooling it must be the issue. That and like it has been said before - the G3 & G4 were closely related. The G5 is a totally different animal.
Technically possible - they did make a Pentium M upgrade for the G4 Cube.

That's something I've been kinda curious about - how likely is it that they'll release Intel upgrades for the old G5s? Is that even possible?

Re: Why no G5 aftermarket upgrade after all this time?
Not likely, different everything for the most part. Nothing is compatible for that to work. Sorry
But, I too would like to update my dual 1.8 to a 2.5 quad core or even a dual 2.7GHz G5 if they sold such a beast. But, IBM would have to have a crap load of them just lying around so the After Market people could buy them and sell them as upgrades.
I can assume that with intel this will not be an issue. You should just be able to purchase any off the shelf CPU they make, that fits the logic board and go. But, maybe Apple/Intel will just change the layout of the connections so you can't. That would suck.

I'd be happy with a better G5 chip to stuff in there. I know the intel chips are out of the question, but a dual core 2.0 chip would be sweet.

I think the elaborate cooling system is a pretty big barrier to entry for upgrade makers.

iThink its the special cooling system thats the problem.
BTW. I looked at the plugs of the plugs on the new quad mac and on the original dual one, and they look identical...
Not that it proves anything, but hey...
Also, it could be that IBM is not selling the chips outside of Apple. ?

Re: Why no G5 aftermarket upgrade after all this time?
I don't think it's a cooling system. The G5 has an unconventional bring-up process (it actually requires a separate 8 bit micropocessor to power it on), and as of yet, I don't think the exact specification of what that does has been cracked. Some hackers tried swapping out faster G5 daughtercards in to the old machines, and the old machines still read them (or didn't boot... I can't remember) as the original speeds. So, it seems it could just be something Apple did (or that IBM is not doing) that makes upgrades more difficult.
If you try to find info about the G5 and overclocking, they talk more about how hard it is to modify the G5s.
