question about OSX upgrades

Specs: emac 800 mhz, 512 sdram pc133(i believe)

My mother in law has the above computer. I was wondering if an upgrade from panther to tiger would speed things up? She also has iphoto 2 or 3, would iphoto 6 be a nice speed bump..or is her machine just to slow to handle the 06 software.

One last question. Can the emac be used as a second monitor? Depending on the answers above she may upgrde to the intelmac 20". Ive told her it would blow away her current machine, but she asked that I find out the above questions. I appreciate any help you can bestow upon this Apple nOOb..

Re: question about OSX upgrades

Max the ram if you want to speed it up.
Going to 1 gig will make a huge difference.

Re: question about OSX upgrades

Tiger is noticably faster than Panther on my G4/400 but I have 1.128 gig of ram.

Especially if you want iphoto to run well.  That said, the new iphoto should work and run acceptably well on that machine with the ram upgraded.

As for the monitor question, that emac can support a second monitor, but only for video mirroring, that is, whatever is on the one screen is exactly mirrored on the other, so its not real useful.

Re: question about OSX upgrades

10-15 % speed increase with Tiger.

Ram is a key point.

Overall recommendation:   Get a 17" iMac or 20" iMac.   Either Intel or PowerPC.    Give the eMac to a relative.

Re: question about OSX upgrades

iPhoto 5 is quick.   a faster drive would help.   more ram.
