What makes a sport.
A friend and I got into a discussion about what makes something a sport. I am of the opinion that there has to be some physical exertion on the part of the participants. Running, jumping, pushing, hitting, throwing etc. This would eliminate things like poker, sorry not a sport. He agrees with this, but then I said that his beloved Nascar isn't a sport either since the car is doing all the work. The drivers are very highly skilled, and it is something that the majority of people will never be able to do at that level, but a sport it is not. So what makes a sport?

Ernest Hemingway said that there are only three true sports: Bullfighting, Auto Racing, and Mountain Climbing. The rest, he claimed, are just games.
Obviously, his definition depended on the possibility of violent death.
Anyone who claims that driving a race car doesn't involve work obviously hasn't driven in a race. Besides which, it's a team sport, and the pit crew seriously works for their money. They lift weights, practice a lot, and occasionally get hit by a car or set on fire.
Now what isn't really a sport? Baseball? Curling? Target shooting? By my own (admittedly lenient) definition, these are all sports.
My issue is not with what is or is not a sport, but with what I call "freak sports"-- ones that require an unusual physiognomy. Basketball is the perfect example. In theory, as long as you can dribble, pass, and shoot, you can make the team. In practice, you have to be really tall. American Football demands that you be big. Horse Racing demands that jockeys be very light. You get the idea.

There must be a defense and atheletic involvement.
Defense rules out things like golf, bowling, swimming, etc.
Athletic involvement rules out things like poker, chess, etc.

Competition is the difference. 400,000 people show up to watch the competitors of the Indianapolis 500. Try to sell some tickets to watch some guys build a skyscraper.

What do you guys think about cheerleading? The way that they do it now, you need to be good at dancing, gymnastics, etc. A lot more physical than what it was when I was in school. But our sports editor wrote a column a few weeks ago about how cheerleading is not a sport, and the letters from readers starting POURING in, arguing with him. Personally, I can't stand the guy, (he's very judgemental & snide) so I wasn't surprised by these letters.

It funny that you mentioned that since that is waht started this whole thing with my friend. We are printing a poster for a new show about cheerleading. I made the comment that cheering was more of a sport than his Nascar since it involves all the dancing and gymnastics. Also I never said it was easy to drive at the level that professional race car drivers do. Nor is it easy to change 4 tires add gas clean the winshield all in a matter of seconds. It just is a highly skilled activity is all I am saying

I think a sport is a competition against other people or teams, involving physical motion (as in hitting, running, or driving (thus counting nascar)).

There are competitions. It's too subjective, though. In my opinion. Like rhythmic gymnastics or something.
