It's all formulaic cookie-cutter lowest common denominator crap.FM radio is not dead.
But like dialup, it may as well be.

The radio comes on for about three seconds for my alarm clock and that's it. I listen to podcasts and get recommendations from www.pandora.com

Re: Is Radio Dead?
Radio in my area sucks donkey balls. The only stations that I can tolerate for even a little bit are the classic rock station and one of the new "non-format" corporate radio stations called "BOB-FM," but even that station (owned by Sinclair) sucks. The best station anywhere close is a Williamsburg station just launched called "The Tide," which is partially owned by Bruce Hornsby. It plays mostly obscure acoustic and rock by songwriters and only carries local advertisers with mild, straightforward (read: non-annoying) ads. Of course, the station is only about 6 months old or so, so hopefully they'll stay as they are...but chances are, a year from now, they'll suck, too. No good station stays for too long down here.

Re: Is Radio Dead?
I just download Howard Stern's latest shows aired on sirius and play them on my iPod in my car.
We used to have the best sports radio station in the country (WEEI #1 rated in the country) and I used to listen to them a lot. But I'm pissed that over the last six months they spoke about 15% Patriots football (!), 5% Celtics (who cares), and about 4% Bruins (who cares) and 76% Red Sox! (Of course these are my own estimates.) The Red Sox Season is over, they sucked, and that's all they talk about? I'm really pissed off at WEEI as they barely start talking football until the 13th game of the season, I mean wtf? So now I listen to my iPod always. WEEI lost me as has regular radio. I'll eventually get Sirius as they have a channel devoted to the NFL and I like their other stuff much better than XM.

Just to add my 2 cents (I just noticed, there is not a "cents" symbol key on the keyboard).
I've been listening to Sirius for a year now. The only local radio I listn to is the high school sports. I can't stand the stupid comercals. Thats why I listen to NPR at work when I can't get satalite.

Re: Is Radio Dead?
I read many, but not all posts here, so apologies for repeating anything.
I work in New York City, and live close by, so I'm in an area that you might think would have a rich and diverse selection of radio stations. Unfortunately, that couldn't be further from the truth. 92.3 KROCK (former home of Howard Stern) was on a steady decline up until Howard left, at which point the station went into a rapid nosedive. A few months prior to Howard leaving, KROCK reformatted their non-Howard lineup with a mix of new and classic rock, pledging to play a wider variety of artists. Whch they did. Only they quickly reverted back to their routine of playing those same artists over and over again.
Now they call themselves Free FM, an all-talk station, and they just plain suck. David Lee Roth replaced Howard, and he is just terrible. With a very few exceptions (ironically being the people who are the least famous), the majority of 92.3's talent is terrible on the air.
So for the time being, until they reformat again (which they will because ratings are in the toilet), I only listen to Seton Hall Pirate Radio, and it is by far the best station on the New York airwaves. Funny how a low-budget college station puts out better content than the glut of corporate stations in the area.
Believe it or not after my little rant here though, I actually bought that Radio Remote for my iPod. Mostly for the remote, but I will use the radio function as well. For now it will mostly be tuned to Seton Hall, but I still have a small amount of hope that radio in NY will become something worth listening to again.

Re: Is Radio Dead?
The bidding wars and Reagan initiated corporate consolidation of radio ownership is what is the root of the dreadful state of radio today.
Of the 8 radio FM stations around here 5 are owned by clear channel and the other 2 are religious and subsidized by churches and then there is NPR.
2 specific Reagan policies lead to the death of radio in general:
1. Allowing essentially unfettered corporate ownership.
2. Giving preference to religious broadcasters when new slots in the spectrum opened.

Boy, no kidding. A few years ago a local church bought into a clear channel like religious station. The FCC gave them a stronger signal almost on top of an independent local station which of course over rode it. They made a few changes, but you still can't get within a mile of that church without total bleedover. Luckily, the commercial station changed to mainstream country, so it isn't an issue to me anymore.

In my old home town a slot opened up and there were 2 main contenders. NPR who at that time was broadcasting from a smal station about 40 miles from town and was only recievible on the extreme south side of town and then there was a fire and brimstone mega McChurch.
The McChurch got the liscence dispite the fact that NPR collected a petition of over 20,000 registered voters in the effected area.

Re: Is Radio Dead?
I used to work in radio also (about 5 years ago). The experience convinced me that music stations are NOT in the music business but rather in the sales business. Today there are only a handful of companies that own all of the priviately owned radio stations around America. As a result, these companies focus on profits, and nothing else. So every commercial station tries to appeal to the lowest common denominator... meaning they tighten up their playlists... so they play the same songs about 5 times a day or 40+ times a week. They are prone to take a good song and run it into the ground.
Today there are some very good music stations around the country, but they tend to be all publicly operated (ex. KEXP in Seattle, WA; KRCW in Santa Monica, CA; KFUV in New York, NY; etc.). I gave up on commercial radio years ago. I don't understand how anyone can listen to commercial radio for more than 15 minutes.
