Re: I'm buying a house, too!

It really is exciting, and i actually kinda fell in love with the first one i looked at. Ok, so i'm a pushover. This house is a one bedroom fixerupper, but it's in the most awesome location i could ask for. We haven't put in an offer yet, but i'm trying to keep level headed. If it isn't meant to be, another one will come along. I just really like the location A LOT.

Re: I'm buying a house, too!

As far as fixer-uppers go, they're nice and they can push your abilities, but be realisitc about what kind of fixing-up you're willing to do. I mean, i can do a lot of tile-work, but I ain't getting on the roof to re-shingle the place.

Re: I'm buying a house, too!

French doors need to be replaced. That was obvious. They go from the bedroom to outside. Other cosmetic things need doing, but until the inspection, there's really no way to tell what needs fixing.

East Bay, Peninsula, or North Bay?

Wow, that's great Justine! Is it true that $500,000 in the Bay Area is a starter home? If so, ouch; and I thought Mass. was bad!

Good luck!

Congrats, Justine!

We're first-time homeowners ourselves, since last August. Lived the previous nine years or so in apartments. Having our own place, finally, is a godsend.

Bay Area is extremely expensive.  Close to a million for some quality homes.

South Bay, which is where i am, but it's a part of San Jose i didn't even know existed. It's in the Almaden Hills.

Wellfleation, yeah, $500k can be consideed a starter in a lot of the areas here. What i looked at is $325k for a 1 bdr fixerupper w/ no garage, but i really like it, and the neighborhood is great. The home is called a "cabin" style and walking down the street, you feel like you're camping.

Thanks for the congrats, everyone. I just hope i'm not getting in over my head. smile

Re: I'm buying a house, too!

It's really amazing the price spread in housing across the country.
For $500,000 you could literally buy a mansion here.
My wife and I were cruising around dreaming “next house” dreams and we looked at a beautiful 5 acre wooded parcel with a modest but nice little house on it and the asking price was $70,000.

I was thinking the same thing reading all these house threads.  Our house (we close on Tuesday!) is about 2000 square feet and hundreds of stores are 8-9 minutes away, along with the Nissan plant and Verizon call center.  Price? 154k.  I'd love to live in CA but we'd have to make about 3.5 times as much and not even have such a nice house.

Either way, congrats Justine! BTW, what sort of downpayment do they want on a house like that?

Re: I'm buying a house, too!

Our place on 5 acres out in the desert cost $65K about 8 years ago; its value ballooned a few years ago and it's worth over $250K now, but the neighborhood is pretty much the same. That's still peanuts compared to property in most of CA.

We bought 10 unimproved acres north of Williams, AZ last spring for $78K. Now there's a lot of commercial development in the pipeline, and the value has doubled already. Building the house is going to run about $150K.

Don't worrry if housing prices go down after you buy, it's a long term investment, and your investment will go up in value over the long term. The only downside to home ownership is maintenance. Replacing the old french doors might be satisfying and gratifying, but reshingling isn't, it's inevitable, however.

Re: I'm buying a house, too!

Nanny, they're suggesting no downpayment with 100% financing. Taking what i would put down and paying of a few credit cards.

By the way, after a crappy nights sleep, and weighing the pros and cons of the place i looked at, i'm pretty sure i'll keep looking. The 3 biggest downsides are that there is no cell service at all in that location (it's kinda woodsy), until about a mile or 2 away, no washer/dryer hookup (or room for then if it did), and simply not enough room for my crap.

When i say not enough room, it isn't because i have so much crap, even tho i do. There is one small closet, in the bedroom. It has no shelf space in it. No other closets in the house.

The cons are starting to outnumber the pros, even though it's in such a great location and the exterior is what i like.

Re: I'm buying a house, too!

When you find the right house, you'll know.  We just salivated over this place after looking for months!  The other "right" houses paled in comparison.
