newbie online play questions and possible rant

after not playing for about a year I have decided to revist halo. overclocking the eMac from 1GHZ to 1.4 has helped immensely. I find that i can go up to another player, f'n unload on them, have them turn around and pull off a single shot kill using the same weapon I was using. There is usally one or two guys  who just get bodycount. The rest of us are just machine gun fodder.

I don't expect to be the best, but I really didn't expect to be outclassed that bad. I have completed the game so i don't think it is that.  Is there a good site for stratigies?

Typically that's a result of lag.  Are you trying to play via wireless?

No, it plays different than some other first person shooters. When I first jumped in I was the definition of suck.

Where you hit matters. What you hit it with to weaken the shields and then finish it off matters as well. Experiment.

Re: newbie online play questions and possible rant

With Halo 1, a pistol (of all things) could drop a normal player in 3 shots, if all three shots hit the head.  Meanwhile, an entire clip from the AR would severely hurt a player, but wouldn't necessarily make the kill, if none of the shots hit the head.  Also, you should keep in mind a few factors:  your target could have an overshield on, lag in the connection to the game server can show you that you're shooting someone who in fact isn't even there anymore, and the server could be running a modded map, in which case the gun you're using will look normal to you, but won't have the intended effect because the server thinks the gun is doing something else entirely.

I've also heard rumor of people hacking Halo 1 to give themselves unlimited health, although I've never seen such a hack in action, and don't put much stock in the rumor (everything in Halo's multiplayer mode is server-controlled)

Need to learn to account for lag. Aim a few steps ahead of the player you are shooting at and you will kill em everytime. The distance doesn't vary much between connections i've found and theres really not many games where you can shoot at the player and have a hit count. For games like that, Ghost Recon is probably the best, it handles lag pretty well.

And I'd know, I've tested quite a few games with their abilities at handling lag. Ghost Recon is definitely the best.

As Icarus said, I don't think it's modded. It's all serverside, therefore if someone is running a cheat on the server, everyone would have it, not just the host.

Finally, just because you have a cable connection doesn't necessarily mean you have a fast connection. I have cable, and yet I get a ping that is worse than most peoples 56k. It depends on your location.

And the hardware between point A and B. All it takes is one gimped router to really mess things up.
