Telling Safari not to add .txt after a .rar file ?

Hi!
Whenever I donwload a .rar file, Safari insists on adding a .txt to the file
(meaning that I have to rename the file in finder, clicking yes I am sure I want to rename the file bla bla bla...)
and so on.

Is there an option somewhere that I can force Safari not to add .txt onto what ever it is that I download ?

Re: Telling Safari not to add .txt after a .rar file ?

You know, I am reluctant to bump something this old, but the forum does say to Search first, and I did. And this is the same question I have, so I am bumping it.

Either this was overlooked or there really is no way to stop Safari from adding a .txt extension to unknown file types. Why can't it just preserve the files name and leave it alone as it is on the server? I don't need to rename files all the time just because Safari doesn't know what it is. I do! So let me handle the naming.

Re: Telling Safari not to add .txt after a .rar file ?

It's not Safari's fault, it's the fault of the server's administrator.  The server is telling Safari, "Hey, I don't know what this is, so it's probably a text file."  So Safari obediently adds the .txt extension.  Safari won't add it for types that it doesn't recognize.

This problem happens with .mp4 files a lot (the server isn't properly configured to serve it with the correct type).  Safari's behavior in these situation, while unfortunate and annoying, is more or less "correct".  I don't know of a way to override it.
