How dare MacAddicts forget the Myth series! (a call to unite!!)

For those who subscribed to MA mags from late 97 to 2000 or so, you know that Bungie was a big part of Mac gaming, and always held the back cover with a Myth ad. Some of you who played those games might remember me (Myth: The Fallen Lords, Myth 2: Soulblighter, and even Myth III: The Wolf Age). The mac community loved Bungie Studios because they always treated the platform with equal, if not greater TLC than the PC-equivalent.

Then there was the black day which scarred our gaming for years to come, the day M$ bought out Bungie, absorbing them into the gargantuan borg-like company it is. This essentially killed Bungie's involvement in Myth and all their other games which they previously held so dear, (I swear Bill Gates was sneering his ugly mug off too). It's now 2006. It seems as if everyone has forgotten about the great Myth series. I am here to change that! (insert patriotic music)

Myth is still alive and very well, thanks to a group called Project Magma picking it up. Both Myth 1 and 2 have been updated to run natively on OSX, with updates coming out on a regular basis. There also have been a number of highly addictive / played maps released including Mazzarain's Demise V, Dream Of Dream, vTFL total port, and Frenzy which sport all new high-res units, added game features, and pushes the limits of the years old engine that makes your jaw drop when you see / play it.

We can't let this great series simply vanish from our Mac history! I am campaigning the staff of MacAddict forums to create a new section for the Myth series as well as a Myth Clan MacAddict! I know that the members of Project Magma (whom with I talk to daily) would be glad to help sponsor the section as well. So what do ya say? There's nothing to lose!

Re: How dare MacAddicts forget the Myth series! (a call to unite!!)

I *just* now finished TFL for the 3rd time since I bought it way back when. Been playing during lunch for the past week. Now I'll start in on Soulblighter.

Problem is Bungie has nothing to do with Myth any more. They gave up the rights to it for the stock *WhoEver* (Take 2 maybe) had in Bungie. Now it's *WhoEver's* franchise and up to them to do with as they please, which seems to be nothing.

When ever someone posts "Hey I got *old hardware* what games can I play?" I always mention Myth as a possibility if it fits the specs (voodoo 2 card or better being key).

Good luck on your revival!

If there is enough interest, I'm sure we could start an [MA] Myth room. I might even join, as I just got it reinstalled again a few weeks ago. Ahh, you sweet little dwarves. How I loved you so much more once you got over your naughty friendly-fire ways.

While the above holds true, Project Magma has become "adopted parents" of the Myth series. Like I said in my first post, they make regular updates to the games, including just recently some major new additions.

I have created the new Clan MacAddict [MA] order on the official server website, PlayMyth. You need to create an account in order to play on the game server. To view the order and join go HERE.

Ah! So it is Take 2...I wasn't sure.

The problem deepens...why would Take 2 put resources on a mildly successful game like Myth when they have huge run away successes like GTA to invest in. It's all about the Benjamens.

This was just as GTA was getting popular. It had a following about as big as Myth at the time. GTA didn't really take off and become the success that it is now until GTA III. Ironically, the inverse could be said for Myth.

I hope that's at least a little tongue-in-cheek... smile

Just FYI, there's a Myth Easter egg in Halo; a couple of places you can go and hear "The Siege of Madrigal" play.

An entire new forum section plus an [MA]Myth? Well, it's ambitious, anyway.

You are mixing things up slightly.  Take 2 owned 19.9% of the company; when Microsoft bought Bungie, Take 2 got (among other things) the rights to Oni and Myth in exchange for their chunk of Bungie.

It's been sooo long I forgot/wasn't sure who had that little bit of stock in Bungie that the Myth franchise paid off.

While we're at it let's do Mechwarrior 2 too! big_smile wink

I was part of Creation way back when ares was the leader and Clem wasn't a douche. Think my name was Jenova or Avarix or something. I use to play alot but lately not so much.

I haven't spent alot of time gmaing lately, but the MMO game in my sig is a good pvp game that reminds me of myth sometimes when its a small scale fight.

the worst part of micosuck buying bungie was that they had to cut short the development of Oni, no multi-player and such.  it was rushed through development and tossed out of the moving van on their way to the megacorps office.

just a call to remember the abandoned oni, we hardly knew ye

Re: How dare MacAddicts forget the Myth series! (a call to unite!!)

Way back in high school, I did a lot of electronic music composing.   One day a friend approached me and said that some smallish software company was making a game and needed some "medieval sounding" music.   I didn't want to write any "medieval" music, so I passed on the offer.

Well... of course that game turned out to be Myth.   (D'OH!)   But several years later, when I finally played myth myself, I must admit that I liked the music very much.   (And it's probably better than what I would've written.)

Re: How dare MacAddicts forget the Myth series! (a call to unite!!)

While I enjoyed Myth greatly, even though I never purchased and played Myth III, I found that I enjoyed another venue even more.

Myth was, and is a great example of 3D tactical/operational gaming. But I find that what I really like is the first person gaming view. Ergo, things like SkyFighters 1945, a WWII flight simulator held, and do hold greater appeal. More skill. But tactics is ever dear to me.

Which is why I digress, there is an even better example of Macs being given the short shrift when a company moves towards the big bucks, or what they think is the path to the big bucks.

A total modification of Unreal Tournament 2004 called Red Orchestra is what I point to. It is an excellent simulation/game of WWII individual combat on the Eastern Front. It even includes vehicles. But since the Mod developers won the rights to the engine they went ahead and made the mod a stand-alone program called Red Orchestra Ost 41-45.

The problem is that when they made the switch they contracted with Steam to distribute the program, and dropped Linux and Mac versions.

Sometimes progess sucks.

Re: How dare MacAddicts forget the Myth series! (a call to unite!!)

I love Myth, although I've never gotten around to installing on my OXS box. I bought the Total Codex Myth I and II pack from Bungie's website back in the day. I've never beaten either game yet. Just as I've never beaten Starcraft, or Galactic Battlegrounds, or Warcraft I II and III, or any of my Gamecube games, etc...

Hm, sounds like a pattern...get a sweet game, play like mad for a week or two, realize I have a wife and two children that get crabby when I spend too much time at my mac, and taper off the playing. I tend to only play games now that I can pick up and play for 30 - 45 minutes at a time, and not have a storyline or a mission to try to remember in two weeks when I play again.

I think that's why Halo has such a hold on me now - the online part anyway. I can't play the missions because my Dual 533MH G4 can't even get through the first mission without crashing. I can play most of the maps online with a minimal amount of crashing, however, as long as the server has a nice low ping.

Anyway, back to the topic. Myth I and II are my all time favorite games, followed closely by Starcraft. I never picked up Myth III, didn't have a mac at the time that could run it.

Did anyone here ever make any mod maps for Myth? I played around with the terrain editor a little bit, but never did anything worthwhile with it. The ability to create mods always fascinated me a bit.

I heard that the mod software that came with Warcraft III was pretty much regarded as the best there was.
