WASHINGTON (AP) -- Vice President Dick Cheney accidentally shot and injured a man during a weekend quail hunting trip in Texas, his spokeswoman said Sunday.
Harry Whittington, 78, was "alert and doing fine" after Cheney sprayed Whittington with shotgun pellets on Saturday at the Armstrong Ranch in south Texas, said property owner Katharine Armstrong.

(For those of you who saw the post before the rapid-fire edit, some coworkers of mine told me about it and said "Killed." Google News didn't have it posted yet, so I took it as they told me.

If you wanted to off someone, shooting them on a quail hunting trip would be the way to do it. However, it does say that the guy is fine, not dead.

The guy's 78; a fine line between fine and dead, anyway.

Yeah, that one word got left over from the first draft of that post kinda changes the meaning of the whole thing. It's fixed now.

Wow. This would be a whole lot less funny if the dude had died. As it is, lmao.
Poor Cheney - I mean, whether or not you think he gives a crap about the little people, shooting his hunting buddy probably ain't doing his ticker any favors.

Did Texas state law enforcement have Cheney to blow a breathalyzer? And why the 24 hour news blackout?

It wasn't in this morning's paper, the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, but did make it to the website @link. No one seemed to know that Cheney was in town. Everything is 'classified' nowadays.

Probably to give the PR flackies the chance to write some spin memos. Though truthfully, unless there is a suspicion of wrong-doing, this would seem to be a private affair.

Just goes to show you that it isn't safe to go wandering about with a Dick who has a loaded gun...

Is this the same Ranch where Cheney goes to shoot captive fowl?
He did that once a few years ago and "bagged" a some 50 or so birds that were born and raised in captivity.
No matter what you think of hunting, THAT is a sick thing to do.

My experience in LA is that there are few quail coveys around, so it would not surprise me if the private ranch actively managed the quail population in some way. I hold little opinion on the morality of such action.

...most (if not all) states require that hospitals and attending doctors to report all gun shot injuries to local/state law enforcement agencies.

Yeah...but the quail at that Texas ranch welcomed Vice-President Dick with flowers and candy.

Is there a requirement that the police then send such reports to the news media? The news media blackout is not the same as a police-EMS blackout.

And what is up with the "...tall grass" in winter spin? Vice President Dick must have been having a Viet-Nam flashback as his account reads like a tall-tale for all you city-slickers...

Maybe he was one of the republicans that has been distancing himself from Bush and needed to be taught a lesson?

I suppose if Cheney intended on having a guy shot, he'd have had it done by extreme rendition, or have some soldier beholden to a backdoor draft do it for him.
