Re: Anybody have Vonage internet phone service? What do you think?

All I have to say is it was a nightmare canceling with Vonage, A TOTAL NIGHTMARE! Apparently my number port was the fattest ever in their history and Vonage told me several times the port was cancelled when it wasn't, according to Verizon. I spoke to Vonage reps, and after explaining my problems, I would mysteriously get disconnected (this happened twice) only to have to call back (they asked for my # so why no call back from them?), be on hold, and get transfered again after getting someone, and then re-explaining my issues.

They ended up sending my Links system to the wrong address (even though I cancelled with in an hour of ordering on a Sunday night and it should have never been sent to begin with) and Vonage fought me on the refund even though it was clear it was not in my power to ensure they got it back by their 14 day RA policy since I never received it. I had to call several times, be mysteriously disconnected a few more times, and fight for this refund.

Again, my number port stoppage was a total nightmare. Once your number is officially ported Vonage owns it and once you give them authorization to port only they can cancel (per FCC regs so I was told by Verizon - I HATE the FCC)! Imagine losing your number of 10 years, on top of having to pay the current carrier to re-up the line. Well, Vonage seemed to have no empathy and one rep actually said, "Wait till Wednesday to see if the cancellation of the port went through" - Wednesday was the day it was supposed to happen for Gods sake so it would be too late! So what he was basically saying was good luck and hope your not screwed. Well, having just a few days until the port, I refused to take this as an answer and spent additional days/hours on the phone until finally someone with a clue and who seemed actually to care (she was probably fired as a result) escalated the cancellation in which it went through.

From my experience this is not a solid or trustworthy company to do business with. Things were not handled in a professional manner, it was more like pulling teeth. I feel very lucky to have gotten my money back and my number stopped from being ported. But this took days and days, many, many hours, and much frustration. There is no way Verizon, etc., would have been this difficult.

They must have learned a few tricks from AOL.

Try cancelling stamps.com - just as hard.
I've tried cancelling twice - they keep sending me bills.
I'm just ignoring them. If they ever show up on my credit history - I'll contact a lawyer.

Re: Anybody have Vonage internet phone service? What do you think?

OK - for better or for worse I'm giving it a try.  For those in the know am I better off setting it up like this

broadband modem-->airport---vonage router-->phone
                                  L>Macs

OR

Modem---vonage router (to phone) --->airport-->Macs

The second seems wise so the v router can "throttle" the connection, but the first is what their materials recommend.

Thanks-
