Dual booting into OS 9 gone forever?

confused
Am I right is assuming that with newer Macs (specifically my G5 iMac) that dual booting into OS 9 is no longer possible? My youngest wanted to play an O L D  game we had and realized that none of the old games that weren't already installed were playable. I think part of the problem is that they need to run a classic installer and load some bits of the game on the HD. So, I figured the best way to do this was to boot into OS 9....and then..."what the...I can't dual boot!"

So is booting into OS 9 possible anymore? If not, why?

Booting into OS 9 has been gone for a long long time.  Basically apple didn't want to develop the OS 9 booting instructions for the new machines.  Classic, the emulation environment within os X, should still work on the g5 imac, though not on the new intel machines.

How about this ?

Connect 2 Macs together, one of which can handle the games installing in Classic or OS 9 with a Firewire cable.  Boot your iMac in Target Disk Mode by holding down the "T" key.

Re: Dual booting into OS 9 gone forever?

actually, many of my older OS9 only games run just fine under classic. they aren't the graphics intensive kind.

your iMac doesn't have classic installed from the factory.. but it is included on your G5 install disk #2
install classic and give the old games a go. worse case, some will run, some won't. but you may get lucky and they all run.

EDIT.. the OS8-9 game installers work just fine under Classic.

Yeah, many of the older games that ran under OS 9 work fine on G5s with classic.

Of course, Classic isn't installed by default.  Look for a DVD that came with your iMac that says "Additional Software and AHT"  That has an installer in it that says "Install Additional Software"  That is Classic support.

Hmm. That might work. I have classic installed, but that doesn't seem to be sufficient to run an OS 9 or earlier installer. I hate being dragged kicking and screaming from the dark ages!

Re: Dual booting into OS 9 gone forever?

Generally OS 9 Installer should work, it has been awhile true, but I am certain I have done it.

Edit: As was said.

OS 9 will not boot on a G5 iMac, or any G5. Period.

Ah, there may be the rub. When these game were released, they were written for OS 7.5. I've had no problem with Civ II MPG or AoE under Classic.

yeah, thats what I thought... the last mac that started up into OS 9 was the mirrored-bay-door G4 (with the ugly front vents)...

Not all Mirror Door G4s will boot OS 9 though . . . and those that do, you have to restore OS 9 from OS X to boot(pun).

Well once restored you can copy that system to the other dual boot mirror door . . .  yada yada, I digress.
