Merom for laptops - 20% increase over Yonah.
Conroe for desktops - 40% increase over the Pentium 4
Woodcrest for servers - 80% increase over the Xeon
Think the MacBook Pro is done yet?

Where in the hell do they get these names? Random character generator.

Intel will release a series of quad-core processors in 2007, Ratner promised. Using Intel’s corporate nicknames, those chips are codenamed Clovertown and Kentsfield. He denied plans to double the number of cores yet again in 2008.
Hopefully 2007 means January and not August. I'll be looking to buy a Kentsfield around that time.

I have heard that Intel uses names of rivers and towns of the Pacific Northwest . . .

Yonah and Merom are Hebrew, the team that develops the mobile processors is located in Israel. The others are names from the Pacific NW.

Hmmm... 45nm next year? Nice! They only need that +64 bit and a new intelmac would be a vera temptin prospect.

Re: Intel Offically Announced 3 New Dual Core Chips
The only useful benchmark is still single threaded performance since damn few apps are multi-threaded, except in the server space.
I wonder how these new chips measure up that way.

It also depends on how well optimized they are for multi-chips. iMovie is multi-threaded and MP aware, yet it is still a dog even on a G5 Quad.

Re: Intel Offically Announced 3 New Dual Core Chips
It is really nice to have a chip manufacturer actually announce desktop chips, and not just chips for toasters and stuff.
I looked at the game benchmarks (UT2k4), and realized that the Conroe chip outperforms the AMD chip by more frames per second than I get total on my machine.
Yeah, I liked Intel all along. No, really!

Intel and AMD have flipped flopped for years.
Well - I think AMD has had the edge longer than previous flops, but it's not surprising for it change.
As far as gaming though, I think AMD still has the edge to to SLI - at least on SLI capable boards.
Doesn't fps with gaming have more to do with video card than anything else?
Sure, I suppose CPU is a factor too.

Re: Intel Offically Announced 3 New Dual Core Chips
I wonder if Apple is going to be able to keep up with each new chip in an Apple product as they become available from Intel, without fanfare, or of they will continue to release newer performance products as they typically have in the past, with varying degrees of fanfare. It's a new world for Apple marketing to get a grip on.

I really don't care about the Intel AMD war. It's good for consumers, and if some people want to measure their p... performance based on who's currently faster, fine.
But when their saying that chip X is better than chip Y because chip X gets 191fps and chip Y gets 174fps, that makes me laugh. If I can get 25fps I consider it silky smooooooth.

Re: Intel Offically Announced 3 New Dual Core Chips
considering apple upgraded the MacBook pro a few days before they started shipping, I think they will be using the newest chips they can get their hands on. What is the shipping time on merom, as in, when will it start going to manufacturers?
goodbye

It will be nice to actually know whats probly coming. Intel don't keep secrets like IBM did.

Agreed.
I never buy the high end chips anyway - you pay the "new technology" tax when you do that.
For the not quite so high end chips, AMD and Intel both have equivalent offerings - only AMD tends to be better bang for the buck.
AMD chipsets also seem to be better supported in Linux - especially for 64-bit.

I've seen game benchmarks that need two of the highest-end Nvidia cards along with the latest CPUs just to get near that, when using enough FSAA and AF at high resolutions. You won't see 174fps in the latest games. You're lucky to get 25.
there's really no need for all of this

Definitely nice to know the future. I thought IBM kept it secret only because Apple asked/made them.
