iTunes subsciption(ish)
Apple now sells The Daily Show and The Colbert Report as "Multi-pass"
you can buy 16 episodes in advance for $10
They are downloaded, not "rented"
what does everyone think?

Exactly.

Re: iTunes subsciption(ish)
They have done "pre-order" purchases before, but with TV shows it becomes like a subscription to a podcast.
I like this idea though. I have wanted this function, there are some series I would like to purchase and then it download like my subscribed podcasts. It would be cheaper in the long run if I know I will by the whole series anywho.

I'm all for a subscription video service. Music I listen to all the time, over and over again. Video? Once maybe twice. I don't need it permanently.

Re: iTunes subsciption(ish)
I said this back when TV shows were first added to the iTMS
A gift card for a season of a show would be perfect.
For example, I could buy a gift card for one entire season of The Office.
I give it to someone, and they type in the code.
Automatically, all the previous episodes in the season are downloaded, and all future ones are automatically downloaded when they become availiable.

That is a really good idea, IMHO.

That's what I thought at first and then I remembered about newspapers and magazines. Exactly the same mechanism.

1080i on a 2.5" screen.
That would be interesting

Re: iTunes subsciption(ish)
so your saying not only will itunes be the death of cable, but that a 2.5" ipod screen will be the death of TV? No, the iTunes can output video to a TV, and once it can output at LEAST 480p, it will be decent value, but until then, your paying for NOTHING.

Technically Standard Definition and iPod resolution are different as SDTV is 480i and iPod is 240p. However the difference there isn't as great as you are making it seem. Both run 320 by 240 images at 30 frames per second. The difference is the 480i take those images stretches them horizontally and inserts scan lines vertically to make 640 by 480. It then inserts the next frame within those scan lines. It then replaces the image in the first frame's boundaries with the next frame. Then it does it with the second frame. Then it repeats the replacement indefinitely. 240p simply displays a 320 by 240 resolution stretched to fit the monitor (on iPod there no stretch and it stays 320 by 240 and on a SDTV monitor it is stretched to 640 by 480.) It then replaces each frame with the next.

$20 bucks a month for the daily show and colbert report?
Those shows are repeated 3 or 4 times a day.

Re: iTunes subsciption(ish)
A la carte pricing of TV shows is what I meant. There is no way I'm paying for regular cable at $50 plus a month. That is far more useful spent elsewhere in my entertainment budget. My TV is a DVD monitor and is actually used for nothing else.
I've been watching Lost on my ibook - I do use external speakers sometimes but it fine for TV. I mean - come on I remember prior to cable and iTunes is better than that. This way I can see some shows I like on the occasional basis that I want to sit down that long - and I'm not paying for TV that I don't watch.
I realize most people aren't there - but as more of this sort of thing becomes available they will be. The quality is bandwidth/cost limited not a matter or principle for Apple or anything.
EDIT:
I won't be paying $30 a month for daily show + CR every month either, but I may buy a pass or two if I've got a slow month coming up.
