How do I open Quark File?

I don't have it, and I know nothing about Quark, but I am getting a Quark 4 file that I need to open.

I am using OS X .2.3, and I have PShop 7, Appleworks, Adobe Acrobat, Illustrator, and of course Apple's 'little apps' like Text Edit. Will any of these open the file?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice. confused

If you don't have Quark, you can't open Quark files.

I don't know of a "viewer" app either.

Find your local service bureau, or a really friendly printer to open it for you. If nothing else, they could always export the page(s) as EPS, then you could rasterize 'em in PS I guess.

Dare I ask what your plans are for this poor, orphaned Quark file?  wink

Re: How do I open Quark File?

Truth: A friend who belongs to a fine oganization that endorses teetotalling when nothing else seems to work, is getting a file (I am not privy to the contents, yet) from another member who made it in Quark, for reasons of obscurity, or perhaps, Anonymity?   big_smile

Anyway, he is going to send me the file to see if I can open it. I would imagine he will try to persuade this person to use a more universal method for creating files. It's quite something when a Mac can't open a Mac file, or maybe I didn't make my problem clear in my first post, and there is an easier answer after all.

Thanks for the input, I'll try Photoshop.

Re: How do I open Quark File?

If you can dig up an old copy of PageMaker, it came with an XPress converter.  It didn't work very well, but you could at least access the document then with Page Maker and get a pretty good idea of what it is.

Short of that (unless InDesign can do it), Quark uses a proprietary format that no other software seems to be able to open.

If you don't have Quark, you can't open Quark files.

Unless you have InDesign 2, that is. I've opened a few QXP files with it with no problem.

Re: How do I open Quark File?

Ya know if you're really desparate, you can open the quark file in MS Word as a plain text file and search out the text you need.
It's gonna have a whole bunch of other gobbledy gook surrounding it, and not be formatted, but you could at least see what it says.

Re: How do I open Quark File?

InDesign 2 is the solution. Opens quark files with good, even great accuracy (sometimes i need to move photos just a smidge)

I believe that you can download a demo of indesign from adobe, or check for a demo copy on one of your macaddict cd's & you should be golden for 30 days or so - definitely enough time to open or even print the quark file.

one note, since you haven't worked with quark. the quark file itself merely holds the information as to where things will appear on the page and thumbnail previews that are used for the purpose of viewing the layout onscreen. if there are any placed grahpics or logos, they will only show in InDesign as previews and they will print looking fairly ragged. quark files also do not contain any embedded fonts, so if the file has unique or proprietary postscript fonts that you do not have on your computer, you will see a missing font message when you open up the file in InDesign and be prompted to replace the font with something that you have on your computer. chances are that the file will only resemble what was originally designed. issues like this are why pdf's exist.

I opened a Quark file with InDesign 1.5.2.
