Very dissapointed! Apple outsourcing tech sup to India
Apple sets up tech support center in India
Apple has decided to set up a massive technical support centre in India, reports India Times. Apple will hire 1,500 people by the end of this year, and 3,000 by the end of next. The facility will be Apple's first support center outside of its Cupertino, California headquarters.
Link - Scroll down to find the blurbEven Apple has succumb! I don't think it's right for people paying for a premium product to have to suffer with substandard support just so Apple can improve their huge market line even more.
I can't stand India tech support and have yet to hear anyone say, "India tech support is great!" I hate having to repeat things a million times. And for some reason it seems India tech personnel are pre-conditioned to think the person they're dealing with has no tech experience and treat everyone, no matter how much knowledge they convey, as if they know nothing.
It's frustrating and I can't see someone who is already overpaying for Apple care (it is very much overpriced compared to the competition) will feel positively after dealing with an an Indian tech agent. Watch Consumer Reports ratings plummet > this will happen, I guarantee it. How is this good for Apple as a whole beyond the mighty dollar? First Intel, then shortchanging the mini with shared graphics, and now this! I don't like the direction of Apple at all.

Re: Very dissapointed! Apple outsourcing tech sup to India
I hate India tech support. If a company wants my business and money smurfing come to me from my own country. Sorry, but how is the economy growing when we keep outsourcing all the jobs to other countries? I don't care if these are the smurf jobs no one wants. Get people of Section 8 status and get them to smurfing work!
Then again, these same companies need so start saying, "made in america" instead of any other country. Of course if this were to happen, I have a feeling all our products would be 3x more expensive.

Re: Very dissapointed! Apple outsourcing tech sup to India
I don't understand. I thought Apple already had a support center in India. I thought half of the support calls to Apple were handled in California, and the over flow was handled in India. I hated getting someone in India... everytime I got someone in India, I would just hang up and dial again until I got someone in CA. The support people in India are horrible. I always get the feeling that they could careless about my problem and just want to move onto the next call.

They work longer hours and are paid less.

Probably because they are. Don't they get paid or some form of compensation on a call turn-over basis?

(Bolded added to quote for emphasis)
Because the economy can grow even with outsourcing. And it is not "all" the jobs.

Re: Very dissapointed! Apple outsourcing tech sup to India
I know it's not ALL the jobs, and I know that companies pay the workers crap. Hell they pay migrant workers crap but whatever they get paid is more than they'd see working in their own country.
I just think it's a bunch of BS.

I agree. It is a bunch of BS for Apple to be outsourcing tech support to India. If the quality of their service drops as a result, I will take the one and only recourse that I am entitled to, and that is I will stop paying for their service.
I do however believe that any company has a right to make a stupid decision and decrease the quality of service by outsourcing jobs. For some companies whose business model is low-margin, commodity products, I can even understand the need to do it, and I believe it is their right to operate their company anyway they see fit to respond to what the market dictates. But for a company who prides themselves on quality, I think it is a mistake.

Apple has been outsourcing for years. Call 1-800-MY-APPLE, and you get someone in England.
Yes, they do have a call center in CA. Wouldn't you know that they have 5 more in the US? When I called, I got the one in PA. They also have I think 3 in TX.
Also, this is a technical support center - a place where customers in Asia will send their computer to be fixed.
They have to go somewhere - and Texas can't do everything.

Consider this a trial. If Apple gets a lot of customer evaluations that say "huge language barrier, ignorant rep" then they will shift the call center back to the US.

This will not bother me at all as long as apple only does iPod support over there. I really really really hope it's only iPod.

I am sure we will see the savings reflected in lower prices.

Re: Very dissapointed! Apple outsourcing tech sup to India
I wonder if there will be a special number with American staff for people with Apple Care?
Apple is getting the stench of a regular el-chepo PC company. *see Dell*
Wow, suddenly owning an Apple feels a lot less special to me.

I, for one, am glad they are finally taking control of their runaway finances. After all, Apple must be in pretty tight financial straits, since they can't even afford to pay their CEO, thereby forcing him to moonlight at some cartoon company.

…and a pretty plane.
So um, mini gets integrated graphics and now tech support moves to India. How is Apple different from Dell again? The tech support ones are funny.

Re: Very dissapointed! Apple outsourcing tech sup to India
Man, seriously, this is taking value out of the mac name. Apple, this is a very low decision.
I think what's happening is apple is getting confident that they don't need their loyal fan base anymore, so, they can do stuff that would dissappoint them.
If apple gets into a pickle again, and they don't have their fanbase anymore for whatever reason, then they will be in deep trouble...

Re: Very dissapointed! Apple outsourcing tech sup to India
1. Does that mean we won't be able to trash talk about Dell's India tech support anymore?
2. Since India have higher education standard on the average then US, you might consider this a upgrade instead of downgrade, a improvement.
3. You can always tak a few course on HIndi.

1. No
2. It might help if that higher education standard included decent English.
3. Two to three languages is enough for me thanks.

Re: Very dissapointed! Apple outsourcing tech sup to India
The people are nice and the idea of saving money is laudable but when trying to solve a problem communication is key. More times than not there IS a language barrier associated and even when you can tell the person on the other end has the skill to fix the unit it doesn't help you when you're trying to work through the issue if you are struggling to work out what they mean and they are having the same issue with you.
In my life I've learned English, Español, & ???. I'm old enough and wise enough not to strain myself further until I'm good with at least one of the later ones.
