Re: Very dissapointed! Apple outsourcing tech sup to India

I don't like this because I don't like Indian people.  They suck at tech support because they spend all their time dancing and praying to gods with 10 arms.  Stupid non-Americans trying to do a white American's job.  Indian people can't speak English either.  Ugh.

Re: Very dissapointed! Apple outsourcing tech sup to India

Apple has tech support?

Damn my Mac's been good to me these last ten odd years!

Also it's nice to see so many people giving the benefit of the doubt, and suggesting that overseas tech support might actually be ok if the people answering the phones were trained properly, but no, obviously to go to India means just to redirect a phone number to some guy who they haven't checked knows anything about computers or can speak english.

Can anyone give me a good reason to call 1800 MY APPLE? Seriously. Between Google, the MAF, and the Apple Retail Stores, what else do you need?

Re: Very dissapointed! Apple outsourcing tech sup to India

I'm using Bellsouth DSL whose tech support is apparently in India.  I think it is great - no really.  We haven't had many issues but when we first got it we would have drop outs every couple of weeks and some other issues that I called them about 4-5 times on.

Each time they were well informed, polite, and prompt.  There was some accent - but hey I'm living in Mississippi these days have you heard how these rednecks TALK?

Get down off the roof everything is going to be fine.

Re: Very dissapointed! Apple outsourcing tech sup to India

I have mixed opinions about this. I have had good and bad experiences from tech support people from various countries.
There have been times I've gotten tech support from India and it was perfectly fine, another time I could just communicate the problem a guy and eventually got it sorted out by someone in Canada.

Once I called 1-800-my-apple and got a guy from Ireland, while he was very polite, I did indeed have to ask him to repeat himself a few times.

Another time I called apple care and got a woman with a very Southern (American) accent and had just as much of a hard time communicating with her as someone from India or elsewhere.

I don't know what the hiring practices are like for call centers in India, but I do know that there have been a large amount of firms who have moved their call centers here (Hungary) in the past couple of years since joining the EU and the prerequisites for getting hired are pretty high. You need to have a high level of education and be a fluent speaker of English as well as at least one other European language. Somehow I doubt most American call centre workers are fluent in Spanish and French on top of English.

So while I find comments like: "Stupid non-Americans trying to do a white American's job." quite offensive (unless is was sarcastic, I couldn't tell), I completely understand the frustration of not being able to communicate with the tech support people. We have a that problem a lot here when phoning Adobe and other companies whose closest office is based in Germany (and almost nobody outside of Hungary speaks Hungarian), so you end up with 2 people using a foreign language
with each other (English), it's gets quite interesting.

I don't understand why apple wouldn't just keep an American call centre for North American customers.

IMHO, in a perfect world all call centres would be in Canada where the people are the easiest to understand. smile

I would be.
I have had to deal with Indian tech support on many occasions and simply understanding what the person on the other end of the line was saying was always a major challenge.
I would love to just once hear one of these mythical Indian tech guys who speak better English than your typical native speaker.
Outsourcing apologists are always bringing that guy up but as far as I know he does not exist.

Frankly I think this will blow up in Apple’s face if they do this to call from their Apple Care program. Imagine paying $250 for extended service only to discover you are getting the same thing a Dell customer gets with their basic plan.

An interesting side note is Dell tried sending it’s business tech support to Bangalore and the hue and cry was so bad they immediately brought it back to the USA.
I bet Apple ends up doing the same. Of course that’s assuming Apple cares about customer reaction which is kind of an unknown quantity right now.

Re: Very dissapointed! Apple outsourcing tech sup to India

I only had a problem with Indian tech support once.  Otherwise, the people have taken care  of me.  I say spread the wealth.  It seems to me a growing middle class in India is mutually benefical to India and the western countries.

Aside from their accents, I think their English probably is better than most American's English.

"Durga literally means the Remote and Inaccessible Goddess. As with all things Hindu, there is more than a shade of irony in such a description of a goddess who is probably the most popular and most worshipped form of the Mother ever in human history. She is no milksop goddess however. This is the Ultimate Warrior Goddess, "great and terrible as an army with banners." She is usually depicted with multiple arms, wielding a rather dazzling selection of arms from the ancient world and mounted upon a very fearsome lion. Sometimes this animal becomes a tiger, and she is called Amba then. The number of arms and weapons she carries varies too. There are six armed forms, eight armed forms, ten armed forms and twenty armed forms."

Re: Very dissapointed! Apple outsourcing tech sup to India

If there were no comprehension barrier I would have no problem with tech support being located anywhere.
It really has nothing to do with India per se, I wouldn’t want to have to deal with a tech with a deep in in the delta Cajun accent either, for one possible north American example.

On a side note I like how these threads always bring out the self loathing some people here feel about being from the USA.

What part of those statement did you found is a cute sarcasm?

I myself found them to be nothing but pure racist remark.

"racist"-discriminatory especially on the basis of race or religion, a person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others

Why isn't anyone questioning that AppleInsider is not completely right on this?  There are other tech centers in the US, and they claim the one in India is the first to be "outside of Cupertino."

I'm not questioning that the India center is opening.  I'm questioning the lack of other tech support centers in the U.S.

When I have always called AppleCare, I always got someone on the east coast.  I also know for a fact, that all laptops sent in for repair go to Texas.

I think its just because alot of the world thinks the entire country is California.

I've gotten support people whose mexican accent is so thick, I can't understand it. I don't mind bilingual hiring practices - that's not the issue, it's a good thing - the issue is that whatever languages you hire someone for - that person should be fluent in all of them. This apparently isn't pc, but hiring someone because they speak Spanish, but barely speak English is just dandy. I know thume is Canadian so how would he know, but call centers in US metro areas, esp for utilities, usually offer several language choices, but always English and Spanish.

As an aside but related to the bilingualism issue, I remember going to Belgium, and a Belgian friend (who lived in The Netherlands) said that all kids learn Flemish (Dutch) and Waals (French), but still refuse to speak or even acknowlege that they know the language that isn't their 'mother tongue'.  It isn't just a 'bigoted American' issue.
