It'll be a big difference, but the bus is what's holding the G4 back.  I like the G4 but why has its potential been thrown away?  I think it's a better chip for mobile applications than the Intel (all the "benefits" from the Core Duo in a notebook have been dispelled at this point other than sheer horsepower) and I think the next notebook I buy will be a refurb 15'' PBG4.  If only they'd sped up the bus speed...

I knew I had heard that the chips were pretty impressive at those speeds but I hadn't seen any comparisons.

And at only 600 bucks, it looks like a good buy.

Wow, those Barefeats tests are impressive.

I believe Freescale had been working on a dualcore G4 w/ 200Mhz FSB and that was as far as the G4 design was taken and they weren't fabbed in quantity.

I'd go for that as well. For PS and FCP it looks quite nice for the money. As long as you already have 1GB+ RAM and some nice 10k rpm + HD's.

Looks quite nice, now remember if you want to run Motion or some such the extra bandwidth of the FSB will help the GPU a lot. Not to mention it will definitely be CI compatible.

Okay... some more "revelations":

In order to make my DA "Motion Ready" (and yes, I really like... umm, want, Motion), I would need" to do the following:

$260 ATI 9800
$89 DVI to ADC Connector
$180 to double my ram from 768 to 1.5
$200 for two 250 gig SATA Drives
$55 for a PCI SATA controller
$600 for a Sonnet Dual 1.8 G4 processor

Total: $1384

..... Or I could sell my 733 G4 and my 22" ADC LCD for about $800 and buy an Intel iMac for an additional $900 and still have almost $500 to add more ram and a bigger drive.

Since I do plan on upgrading to Final Cut Studio by the end of the year, I am figuring that I might come out ahead with the iMac.  Of course,  I could do nothing at all until the Intel towers are introduced.  I am sure that i will need to do "something" with my ADC since it doesn't look like the new video cards are supporting it.

Decisions, decisions....

Wait for the towers, and in the meantime you can save up money, so it will help you out all around.

if you can't buy it all at once or your credit is poor, you saw that you can still upgrade to a pretty decent machine a bit at a time.

but I am with the others.... upgrade at the wall socket.

for all the flack they seem to get, I have been most happy with all the displays, both ADC, current and the older colorsyncs they name branded in the last twenty + years.
that being said, I currently run one medical grade black&white planar 20" which is great, plus a 20" apple al display.
and I still want one of the 30's
but there are some great displays out there without the Apple name on them.
Macworld has a couple good reviews.. sorry i am too lazy to get you the links tho.

after you get new.. it would be good to keep your DA in your lan if possibletho.. ya never know when it will come in handy.
