Re: What do you use your Dell for?

Or it could be that Dell produces a quality product and has decent service for a good price.

So does apple of course, except for the price, which is on the higher end of computers.

Re: What do you use your Dell for?

I wouldn't call Dell's products "quality" but they are often worth their inexpensive prices.

Re: What do you use your Dell for?

true, the only quality i've noticed is that on occasion their computers can run pretty darn quiet. I have to look at the lights on some of them to make sure they are on; when the monitor has been manually turned off by an idiot. smile

They are at about the same level as a macmini; or an iMac at times. But it's most definitely a swing and a miss. Dell doesn't guarantee this "feature" but it might happen 25% of the time--given the range of years of computers we get in..

Other than that; windows sucks, i hear tons of people who own them always having problems with random stuff not working, etc..

It seems like most computer companies will have their standard problems, but dell might exceed that by just a little bit. (granted not as bad as inCompaHP)

Depends on which products you look at, the small business stuff is good, the home stuff, not quite as much.

My business Dell burst into flames at the power cord.

That's quality!

Re: What do you use your Dell for?

I can't really complain about the quality of my Dell.  I've had it since 1999 and have never had a single component fail.  With the exception of upgrades to the graphics card and combo drive, it's all original equipement.

I wish I could say the same for the OS.  The machine has seen several versions of Windows (98, 2000, XP), and in each case the OS has become bloated and unstable and required reinstallation at least once.

I just wiped the drive and installed Ubuntu last night, so it'll be interesting to see what kind of mileage I get out of it.

Re: What do you use your Dell for?

Since this is bashing Dell tread, I have one.

I thought Dell is a US based company, why are they selling the latest 24in 2407 lcd in Japan Dell but still trying to sell oldie 2405 here in US/Canada, are we second class citizen in Dell's own home!

that is weird!

You clean yours?

On a more serious note, the guy that it happened to had cats involved.  I had a cat once get involved with wires - it sparked like crazy.  They ran away from it - not towards it like this guy is claiming.

My Dell sparked at the surge protector level.  Sparks were flying everywhere, and actually burned part of the cubicle.

If it sparked from the surge protector, it is entirely possible you had a cheap surge protector and it had nothing to do with the dell.

That would be possible except for the fact:

a)  They issued a recall on the power adapters AFTER the incident occurred due to "the possibility of a fire"
b)  The product in general was never released to the public and was a "test" to see if Dell's standards were high enough.  The company went back to IBM.

Re: What do you use your Dell for?

So I guess it wouldn't be good to mention: iBook logic boards frying, iMac G5 capacitors blowing, white spots on the 15" AlBook screens, TiBook paint chipping and hinges breaking, PB 5300 cases cracking and batteries spontaneously combusting, G4 "windtunnel" power supply recalls, G5 whining noises (with certain graphics cards) and AlBook battery recalls.  Occasionally you get a bad batch of components.  It happens.  Lots of people have problems with their Dells and you can read all over the internet about it.  You can also read quite a few Apple horror stories as well.

To Dell's credit, they did issue a recall after it happened - just like Apple has done in most cases.

I use my Dell XPS 400 for gaming.  And pretty much only gaming.  Just not worth using otherwise.  I have a Mac for everything else.  smile
