Re: End times
"For you know this first, that in the last days there will come ridiculers with their ridicule, proceeding according to their own desires and saying: “Where is this promised presence of his? Why, from the day our forefathers fell asleep [in death], all things are continuing exactly as from creation’s beginning.” For, according to their wish, this fact escapes their notice, that there were heavens from of old and an earth standing compactly out of water and in the midst of water by the word of God; and by those [means] the world of that time suffered destruction when it was deluged with water. But by the same word the heavens and the earth that are now are stored up for fire and are being reserved to the day of judgment and of destruction of the ungodly men.
However, let this one fact not be escaping your notice, beloved ones, that one day is with Jehovah as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day. Jehovah is not slow respecting his promise, as some people consider slowness, but he is patient with you because he does not desire any to be destroyed but desires all to attain to repentance."
-2Peter 3:3-9
"I heard, and my belly began to be agitated; at the sound my lips quivered; rottenness began to enter into my bones; and in my situation I was agitated, that I should quietly wait for the day of distress, for [his] coming up to the people, [that] he may raid them… …Yet, as for me, I will exult in Jehovah himself; I will be joyful in the God of my salvation.
Jehovah the Sovereign Lord is my vital energy; and he will make my feet like those of the hinds, and upon my high places he will cause me to tread."
-Habakkuk 3:16,18,19

The less said about that series the better off we are. Too many worms in that can.

Re: End times
My theory is, people obsess about the end of the world because doing so allows them to avoid dealing with the problems of today. It's a kind of cop-out. After all, why bother working for a better society when it's about to come to an end?
Actually I think much of our civilization is now geared toward not making an effort in that direction.

The typical right wing short term thinking about the earth, environment, population and other long term issues makes alot more sense when you take apocalyptic belief into account.

Okay, but for all the luxury the obsession supposedly grants of sitting back from participation, a lot of people are actually driven to advance its imminence by action of some sort.

Not really- some scriptures state outright part of the judgment is to bring a ruin to those ruining the earth.

Yeah, there are fanatics, to be sure ... but they're making efforts to end the world, so to speak, rather than improving it. There is a difference.

They may disagree, but its no interpretation, its a direct quote:
Revelation 11:18 "But the nations became wrathful, and your own wrath came, and the appointed time for the dead to be judged, and to give [their] reward to your slaves the prophets and to the holy ones and to those fearing your name, the small and the great, and to bring to ruin those ruining the earth."

Advocating salvation, love, faith, and hope is an effort to end the world?

And they don't believe what the Bible says.
Wars and rumours wars, famine, etc. - they are not signs that the end is here, they are just the birthpangs.
Jesus is very clear "This Gospel will be preached to all ethnicities - and then the end will come".
That hasn't happened yet, and that is how we know it is here.
That's not to say we shouldn't pay attention. Birthpangs increase before the birth - as wars are certainly increasing. Israel is a nation again. A lot of things are done in the name of peace, but there is no peace. We are close to having the Gospel preached to every ethnicity.
Will it come in my lifetime?
I don't know. But it sure looks like it might.

Jesus (Isa) will return to over-throw al-Dajjal in the battle of 'Aqabat Afiq' in Syria, or at the Lud gate in Jerusalem according to another account. Jesus will "kill all pigs and break all crosses", confirming Islam as the only true religion. After 40 years Jesus will die and be buried next to Muhammad in Medina (Islam teaches that Jesus didn't die in A.D. 33 but has been in a state of "suspended animation" since)
Allah will destroy all the nations except Islamic ones. At the end of Jesus' and the messianic Imam's rule, the angels will be destroyed and the earth will "spill out its contents".
Hell is a lake of fire where non-Muslims/infidels live in torment.
