Treo/Verizon - worth it just for Palm?
Hi ~ need a new palm and my Verizon plan isn't up until year-end. Wanted a Treo 650 but the Verizon gal told me about the extra $45/mo or "things don't sync right". I only need it for the Palm, don't need email capability really - is it worth buying the Treo or a lot of hassle? If I don't buy the extra $45/mo can I still sync it w/my G5/10.3.9? I sync to Entourage too, don't use Palm Desktop, just Docs-to-Go and plenty of apps. Is there a better Palm-based phone?
or maybe I should get out of Verizon altogether? Advice much appreciated..

Re: Treo/Verizon - worth it just for Palm?
1) I'd say the Treo isn't worth it just for the Palm. Get a regular Palm if you don't need the phone or wirless data functions.
2) The Treo 650 is the best Palm OS based phone. There are other "Smartphones" that use Windows Mobile or... I forget the name of the other OS.
3) Palm Desktop is no longer supported on the Mac. I sync my Treo 650 with iCal/Address Book using The Missing Sync. It claims to work with Entourage, too.
4) I don't use Verizon, so I can't comment on how they cripple their phones.
Good luck!

Thanks a lot for the advice - I really just want the phone/palm combo to get one more thing outta my bag! But I think I'll wait and see what else comes up...

djshy, you highly recommend a Windows Mobile device on the MacAddict forums? That seems so wrong.

Re: Treo/Verizon - worth it just for Palm?
TheMouthOfSauron, I also need to upgrade a palm. I think the original question is whether the Treo 650 is a decent Palm and a phone if that is the two devices you need to carry and you don't want to pay an exhorbitant data fee. There is a person here at work selling a Treo 650 but I still have a year and a half on my Verizon account so my question is, is the Treo 650 a decent Palm upgrade to my 4 year old Tungsten E? My initial thought is that the addition of a keyboard is a good thing and it has a faster chip. But that is all I really know right now.

Re: Treo/Verizon - worth it just for Palm?
The Treo 650 is a good Palm. I was under the impression that the OP was going to get one and only use it as a Palm, maybe I misunderstood. Compared to your Tungsten E, the Treo 650 screen has the same pixel dimensions but is probably physically smaller.
The Treos use a thumb keyboard vs. Graffiti on the Tungsten E. The keyboard isn't a clear win over Graffiti, I find I make fewer mistakes and can type faster than I write with the stylus but it can be awkward to hold the device in the right position to type easily. You should stry both and then decide.
If you buy a used Treo, you may be able to switch it in for your current phone without breaking your contract; check with you provider.
Also, I should point out that there is now a Treo 700p available, which you may be interested in.

Thanks for the advice, I do want to use the Treo as a phone and a Palm, I just don't need to receive emails on it, etc.... It's time for me to upgrade so I'll check out the 700. Thanks again,

Re: Treo/Verizon - worth it just for Palm?
Thanks! The 700p does look a bit nicer. The higher resolution camera and EVDO support might be worth the price of admission - if Verizon allows you to use EVDO for the $5 per month mobile web access allowed on the rest of their phones (not too likely). However, the used 650 is $300 cheaper (based on the current with contract price of 399 with 2 year contract which I am not eligible for for another 6 months). So I think I will give it a try.

The recommendation of "$45 a month or it won't sync right" is their under-educated way of saying that you should get the unlimited data plan so that you don't see any data overage costs when you check your mail on the thing, like, every 10 minutes. Has nothing to do with Syncing with the Mac.
I also recommend The Missing Sync for Palm devices, though.

yeah, That's the VX6700. I hear it's a fantastic phone, but the lack of Mac support is a bummer.
In general, Verizon is great. If you want cell service over WiFi, get the Treo, it's a good phone too.

Have you looked at the Motorola Q from Verizon? Mark/Space and their Missing Sync for Windows Mobile software seems to work.
It all comes with the price of admission.
