Well, for starters - it's against forum regulations.  Second, the person you responded to hasn't posted here in months so they won't see your response.

Look, I'm not sure why you feel the need to "educate" me on how to use forums. I have been using them for many years. Second, don't talk about the rules if you don't know them. If you are really interested you can go here:

http://www.maclife.com/forums/misc.php?action=rules

Yep, nothing in there about replying to old threads. If there were a rule against it they could simply set old threads to lock after a certain date, but they don't. It doesn't matter if the original person is going to read my response or not. I quoted their message for context. That is the proper way of replying in a forum. Do you think that every single person that posts something in a thread always comes back to read responses??? This is not email, it is a conversation between many people. In fact, if you look at the views vs. replies most people simply read posts without ever replying. Therefore, the quote context is included for them so that they know what you are responding to.

The entire reason why threads are kept for so long in forums is so that people can do searches and either read or pick up discussions that have taken place in the past. It doesn't matter if a conversation is one month or one year old, if it is relevant today then it can be replied to and the conversation can continue. If you don't care about the topic then don't read it. I'm sure that there are many topics that you don't care about but I would hope that you wouldn't post to them telling people not to clutter the first page with topics that don't interest you.

Remember, the first rule of the forums is:
The biggest rule around here is "don't be a jerk." Follow that, and you'll be fine.

Your choosing to reply to a thread just to tell me: "I would have thought you better [sic]" is a bit on the rude side.

I sincerely hope that reading one response to this old thread didn't ruin your day too much.

Enjoy,
Frank

Re: iPod Nano on the Bike

That must be why all those pesky moderators lock zombie threads.

Rule de jure? Maybe not. But it is a defacto rule of these forums.

And the fact that threads do not lock after a set amount of time means nothing, because there are exceptions to the rule, like a thread author bumping their own thread.

Let's see, you've been a member since 2005 and I've been here since 2000 and yet you know the de facto rules??? Also, your point about moderators locking zombie threads, if it were locked then I wouldn't have been able to respond.

This is getting ridiculous at this point. Other than the fact that someone doesn't like to see an old thread I haven't heard a logical or coherent reason as to why someone shouldn't reply to an old thread. On the other hand, I have provided several reasons as to why it would be a good idea to reply to an old thread. Far be it from me to think that logic should take precedence over emotions or personal opinion though...confused

Re: iPod Nano on the Bike

problem is with sticking it in your pocket is that the earbud wires aren't long enough. At least when I use mine, it isn't. When I go mtn biking, I throw it in my camelback. When I ride to work/around, I throw it in my pant pocket, unless I'm wearing a jersey. pretty cool idea if you ask me...

I'm moving this thread over to the iPod Forum.

Re: iPod Nano on the Bike

Besides, I think that kind of derogatory only works if you're the one that's been here since 2005 and someone else has been here since 2000. It's like a brag of "you've been here longer than I have and don't know the rules?!" thing.

I'm sorry, are you two trying to talk trash to me?

Phydeaux, the point was that this person was claiming to know some assumed rules (i.e. not written anywhere) even though they haven't been around anywhere near as long as I have.

This conversations is ridiculous at this point. I just don't understand why the same people that hate old threads being brought to the surface will waste their time replying to said thread and thus keep it on top of the pile longer.

confused

Wow, not what I've come to expect from long time members. Usually the completely rude and uncalled for behavior is reserved for newbies, trolls, or minithink tongue
