Taiwan's Austek wins order for 1.2 mln Apple iBook notebook computers
04.03.2006, 08:50 PM

TAIPEI (AFX) - Asustek Computer Inc (2357.TW) has secured a contract from Apple Computer Inc for iBook notebook personal computers, estimated at about 1.2 mln units initially, the Commercial Times reported, without citing sources.

The laptops will be powered by Intel Corp microprocessors and equipped with 13.3-inch liquid crystal display panels.

Apple Computer will start selling the notebook PCs from June, while contract suppliers of panels to start deliveries from April.

The US firm will source the panels for the laptops from AU Optronics Corp (2409.TW) and Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp (3009.TW) as well as South Korea's LG Philips LCD.

AU Optronics is expected to supply about 40,000-50,000 panels to Apple a month, it added.

I was kinda hoping for a 12" widescreen.  Perhaps they are using that form factor for a 12" Power...err... MacBook Pro.  Then we could have ambient light sensors and a backlit keyboard on all of them.

No, but it can be good enough  - unless they stick it with a crappy integrated chip.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Re: Intel iBooks coming soon

If you want to run at ultra-high resolutions with all goodies cranked up at fast frame rates, then you need a desktop - or one of those 9lb behemoths.  Oh, and you need a Windows box, a Mac won't cut it.

For others of us who don't game often, but do enjoy it now and then, and are willing to turn down a few settings, then a laptop can work just fine.  Unless it has an integrated video chip.  As long as I can run WoW with reasonable speed, I'm happy.  I'm not expecting 100fps in Doom III - that's just not a realistic expectation.

What, "Have fun?"

You don't need to game at 1600x1200 with 8xFSAA and 16X AA with every setting at its highest to have fun.

Not very well.  Even an entry-level card will yield much better performance.

I agree.  Apple is an "innovator" for a year, then they fall behind for two years, then the cycle repeats.

Re: Intel iBooks coming soon

I won't buy an iBook (equivalent) if they had integrated graphics. I'm not looking for super gaming performance, but I want something better than that. Namely, something that will handle T&L or vertex shaders on the card. Since I'm on the market next school year for a laptop, I'll probably buy either an mid to upper tier iBook equivalent, or if none have dedicated graphics I'll grudgingly get a MacBook Pro. (Grudgingly because I would prefer not to spend $2000 on a laptop with my tower to do the heavy lifting) Of course, if they don't have a laptop with dedicated graphics under $2000, there will be a serious problem. roll

Those are better than just fine. I can run WoW on an 867 QS with a Geforce 3. WoW really isn't that big of a resource hog (it just needs ram out the ass...which could pose a small problem with integrated video if you don't upgrade your ram).

Re: Intel iBooks coming soon

I'm thinking that the low end would have integrated graphics, and a higher level model will have a discrete graphics card. Like I said, it would be very sad indeed if the cheapest you had to go for a real graphics card was $2000.

Re: Intel iBooks coming soon

Discrete GPU's will be one of those things that differentiate the PowerBooks — I'm sorry: MacBook Pro's, from the iBooks. I wouldn't count on any Intel iBook coming with discrete GPU's.

A guy can dream...

Wouldn't it be nice to get an Intel iBook (single core, more than likely...right?) with decent grafx capabilities for under $800? I mean, the screen is only 13.3" anyway...

*Sigh*

When I got my iBook, there weren't any rumors of iBook upgrades soon, Intel, or upgraded grafx.

If only I'd waited another 1 1/2 years...but on thre bright side, at least I got $130 off the price from Amazon.

I'll be disappointed if the new iBooks are $1,000 + dollars.
