Apple announces every PC game ever will come to the Mac.
...via Boot Camp.
Boot Camp lets you easily setup and install Windows on a separate partition of your Intel-based Mac, and lets you choose between them on launch. It's going to be built-in to Leopard. Unfortunately, it's not a side-by-side option (like VirtualPC) or virtualization; instead, you literally have to reboot each time you want to change systems. Still, it's world's better than nothing, and with an official Apple stamp of approval, you can bet it's far safer than whatever the hackers had cooking.
I know this hardly means gamers will be switching to Macs in droves, especially as only the Power Mac offers any significant upgradability, but this is still massively beautiful news for those of us who want to play the occasional PC game, and don't need to keep up with all the latest hardware. All I'm waiting for is the next announcement, that the Leopard version will allow VirtualPC-like simultaneous running, and I'll by crying like a baby again.

There's a BC-specific thread in CB, just so you know. The most important difference between Boot Camp and the other solutions is the inclusion of working video drivers, (I believe).

Yeah, I saw that one, but threads on the same topic can have different targets in different forums. This'n's about games. They can keep their filthy BIOS talk in the other room.

In related news: Commiserations & commiserations & commiserations. This is going to be rough for some.
Watching The Brad Hole with some interest. I don't see how porting Mac games is going to viable industry – ported games have always been slower, late-coming (and hence apparently more expensive) and often affected by problems that didn't affect the original (mod support, damnit!). This isn't meant to be a criticism of the coders – there is limited time and the time it takes to go from Windows code to release is impressive. But I don't see how that market can exist, even with the inconvenience of rebooting.

Yup you can now use UED (Unreal Editor) for the admission price of a Windows install and all the other editors, map makers and such that have been denied us for so long.

Re: Apple announces every PC game ever will come to the Mac.
I was more thinking along the lines of having Mac games work with pre-existing mods (Why the buggery smurf doesn't Zero Hour support .big files properly still?) but, yes, map editors etc. are also damn irritating not to have. Perhaps the harshest thing is that I can't see how the porting industry can supply these sort of things – there isn't enough cash to hire enough coders. It's a shame.

I was thinking "Sweet, that means I can play PC games when I get a MacTel!" But then I realized that there really weren't any PC games I was dying to play.
I'm just more of a casual gamer.
Edit: oh, and that other thread mushroomed out of control before I really joined it, so it's nice to have a specific thread on this topic. BTW, they specifically say that they have graphics drivers.

Macologist.org has tried out 3dmarks on the iMac. Not good.

Windows XP Home sucks though
But,
http://www.bestbuy.com/site//olspage.js … e=category
Home is $200 there, and $300 for pro (non OEM of course).
However, I can get any copy of Windows going back to 98 free through my school.

No more Mac games ever? Great move, Apple.

Brad,
What does this mean for people like yourself that have been doing great work for so many years. I have a Rev B iMac and would still like the occasional game for it. There still are tons of non Intel machines that people need to game on.
The Boot Camp would be good for people like me who have to use Windows for School but want to use OSX for everything else.
Thank you, may I have another.

Re: Apple announces every PC game ever will come to the Mac.
I think it would depends which way Apple's sales go with this new move.
If more people buy Macs, with the possibility of running Windows, it could mean in the medium-long term, there will be more demand for Mac games.
But, in the short term, the pent-up demand by current Mac users for those PC games will stifle Mac game sales, as those Mac users install Windows and the PC version of those games (my guess is there will be a lot of piracy as a result of this, of those pieces of software).

Re: Apple announces every PC game ever will come to the Mac.
I'd still need my Mac specific games simply because I don't know how to use Windows. Plus it would probably run Windows just as well as an emulator and PC games would drag horribly.

What are you talking about? This is running Windows natively on the Intel processors in the Intel Macs.
It should run at full speed of a "regular" Windows PC.

Re: Apple announces every PC game ever will come to the Mac.
That's the whole point, B.S. The Intel Macs use standard PC hardware, so Windows will run at, well... the exact speed it would if that processor and graphics card were in a PC case. That's the magic of this whole situation. Games will literally play as fast as the hardware will let them, with none of the emulator overhead we've been used to.
Of course, the true magic moment will be when MS update VirtualPC for Mactel, or when Apple scoops them with a built-in alternative... because then we can run Windows alongside OSX (with no rebooting necessary), with only a very slight performance hit. That will be my happy day.

Re: Apple announces every PC game ever will come to the Mac.
I don't see this as anything but hurting Mac gaming. I've got both platforms here and i've always tried to support both when i've had the Mac hardware able to run it but if I had a Intel Mac it would be a tougher choice to buy a Mac version now unless theres better performance on an OSX version. Much of the time the OSX versions of games that I like do tend to be more stable, so that is a benefit there. Then theres the price differences. PC games drop much faster in price than Mac ones and for this reason on a lot of games, I usually wait until a b-day or Christmas before I get Mac versions. Sorry but $50 vs $30 or less is a big price difference for me.
Unless theres gonna be some nice benefit to playing on OSX over Windows then a lot of ppl are gonna have to change jobs coming up

Gimme a break. It only sucks if you're pirating them both for free. "Professional" doesn't add anything that most users will care about. That said, XP Pro SP2 is $135 at newegg.com.

There aren't that many Mac game porters, so only a few of us will be looking to change jobs. ;-)
