WooHoo! Civ IV for Mac slated for June!
According to Aspyr's website, it's currently at the "First Playable" development stage and should be hitting the stores in a couple of months.
http://www.aspyr.com/games.php/status/ <-- it's currently down at the bottom of the list, click the status First Playable for a definition.

Spore doesn't make Civ 4 any less great, and they cater to somewhat different tastes. It's not a competition.

Wait... is Spore coming out in June?
I'm actually a little worried. In addition to the Rev., which I'm officially hopeless about now, I've got so many Mac and (with my new computer early next year) PC games I'm going to play... things might get ugly.

And on a related note, I asked a friend if he would play Civ IV with me, because I've never played one before. He was actually taken aback a little bit, like I asked him to kill someone. Turns out that he was so addicted to an earlier Civ that he almost didn't finish school, and now he's not sure if he can do it again.
Sweeeeeet.

I have been waiting for this for awhile. And everytime I mention it to my PC friend, he says that "I've been playing it for a few months now."
But I'm still pumped.
Summer fun!

I have been playing Civ since my LCII days.
I still miss the Cheat menu. Sometimes it is just FUN to deliver a "Rain of Steel" on some poor unsuspecting bastard! Best computer game ever made.
My -then- new wife was amazed that I spent an entire saturday playing Civ!
So I doubt that she will be as thrilled as I am at this news. lol

I tried to get mine interested in multiplayer Civ II, but to no avail. Actually, I don't know any female Civ players. Maybe world domination is a "guy thing."

Re: WooHoo! Civ IV for Mac slated for June!
When is this coming out?
I hope it's better than either versions of Civ III for Mac now. The first version (it seems to have been published by Atari for Mac) doesn't seem to work properly with multiple monitors. And the one put out by Aspyr is dirt slow when it's the computer's turn to play (3 minutes to calculate, when I couldn't even see 1/3 of the map, and only had contact with 2/6 civilizations, with all animations off...I don't remember this from Civ II back in the days on my Powermac 6500).

Yeah, well I've been playing it since my setting it up on the kitchen table days. I found the rule book in an old box a while ago - blast from the past!
Considering what CivIII does to my current comp, I suspect CivIV will require an investment in hardware for me (which, unfortunately, I hadn't planned for another year or so).
...but I digress: does anyone play the multiplayer CivIII? I wanted to pick it up, but I've only noticed a Civ III game on GameRanger once in the past month, since I started online gaming again. If nobody is playing it, I won't bother with buying the new box set.

It is now in Alpha stage and still slated for June.
And I just pre-ordered it. So I hope it works well.

The game has actual 3D stuff this time, but when I picked up the PC version I remember thinking the requirements weren't very steep. So you probably won't need a G5 to do the job.

If I may play the skeptic, I have thought that game developers have been becoming more and more loose over the years with what they consider the be "requirements". I have been burned buying games for which my machine was well above the "minimum", and yet my machine struggled to cope, even with settings adjusted.

Re: WooHoo! Civ IV for Mac slated for June!
Well, they can't require us to buy a new Mac 'cause that would be an Mactel, leading us to just go ahead and by the PC version and bootleg Windoze. I'm hoping that they were thinking about all the G3 iMacs and iBooks out there and designed it with that large base in mind. I say this being hopefull that I'll be able to set up LAN games with my boys and our older Macs.

Re: WooHoo! Civ IV for Mac slated for June!
I just found this on the Aspyr news release page. Looks like it is written for both PPC and Intel processors.
Work at Aspyr internally is wrapping up on Civilization® IV for Mac, which if all goes well should be shipping in June. The game is in full testing, and both Intel and PowerPC versions are looking good.

Re: WooHoo! Civ IV for Mac slated for June!
The requirements are pretty beefy. They require a 1.8 Ghz G5/Intel based Mac.
Now that I look at those PC requirements though, I do have an old Dell laptop that would meet them (only a 32MB Geforce2Go though)...

Re: WooHoo! Civ IV for Mac slated for June!
It's a surprisingly beefy game- lots of calculations, lots of shaders and so on.
Aspyr's min requirements are on the conservative side, at least, not set by Marketing. Meet them and you should be good to go.

Re: WooHoo! Civ IV for Mac slated for June!
The game kicked the ass of my friend's PC. He has a pretty slick gaming machine, but the graphics killed it in a few places. I believe these were bugs that later revisions cleaned up, but even so... the game lags a bit, and takes a long time to load even on a powerful PC system.
I'm still excited.

Re: WooHoo! Civ IV for Mac slated for June!
Hmm. Well, we'll just have to wait and see. I was thinking of preordering the game, but maybe it would be a better idea to wait and see what the reviews sound like. I'd hate to think that my iMac G5 1.8 GHz would lag...
