Apple CD Drive in Performa can't read CD-R disks

I have a Performa 6300 with an Apple 4x CD drive (I replaced the original a few years back) that can't seem to read CD-R media. I'd have to boot the machine to check the model (assuming profiler would have it) and I don't want to right now. However, is it reasonable to think that an old SCSI CD drive might not be able to read modern CD-R or CD-RW media? I have several CD-R disks that won't work, but all comercial disks seem fine. Is this an example of not recognizing a modern media standard or is the drive dying. While I'd be a bit bummed to know it can't read CD-R, I'd REALLY hate to think it was dying; buying a replacement SCSI is pretty low on my list of stuff to do!

Re: Apple CD Drive in Performa can't read CD-R disks

I think that it's just a case of the drive not being compatible, although it does seem to be a bit too modern for that...

Have you tried with a test CD burnt at 1x or something?  confused

Are you sure that its not a CD-RW disc? These old drives will read CD-Rs without a single problem, but they won't read a CD-RW.

Nope. All three disks that are unreadable, and unmountable, are CD-R. Two are Imation and the other I can't tell. I need to try some other CD-R's and do some test burn like ~Coxy suggested. I wonder if there are multi-session burns or if the CD session was close properly. I did find a Clearance  Sony  CDU-415  Sony 12X SCSI-2 CD ROM at BUY.COM for $14. I might buy that and try it.
