Windows XP Warning Stickied on Your Desktop

A front page newspaper report (in my country at least) stated that Microsoft will be implementing a rather radical anti piracy measure to make it uneasy for people running non genuine XP.

Next time you download a patch for XP, if your copy is not original, there will be a floating window on the lower right of your desktop that is permenantly FIXED there, prompting you to that your copy is not genuine.

This only affects users in five countries so far: USA, Britain, New Zealand, Australia and Malaysia. Why these 5 countries? That i Don't know.

Re: Windows XP Warning Stickied on Your Desktop

..possibly even before MS implements it.

The way I see it, I don't see how MS can win this war. Most people I know use Win XP Pro at work, or know someone that does. And, at least as I recall, the majority of hacked installations are of the XP Pro 'corporate' version. So long as software exists that can extract the license key from a legit version, or (as in the case of OEM) where MS insists on putting said key visible for all to see, it will remain as easy as pie to acquire a "legit" license key.

Re: Windows XP Warning Stickied on Your Desktop

If Microsoft really wanted to tick someone off when they illegally obtain Windows they would implement something better. Just imagine a XP user gets the latest patch. Nothing happens and they're thinking, "Ha, Microsoft is stupid!" Five minutes later image of the scream face pops up on the screen with a loud screaming noise. pWNED!

The workaround will probably be hitting the close button they forgot to remove.

All Microsoft really has to do is make it look like the patch installed and just not do anything.  That's punishment enough.

There will be a virus that kills this.  The fix is to update to the latest security patches.

If this doesn't work, unauthorized copies of Windows XP will be turned into Microsoft Bob.

Watch Microsoft's implementation of this repeatedly screw over legitimate users while pirates immediately find 30-40 workarounds, not unlike their OS activation scheme from when they first launched Windows XP.

I remember windows 98 where your serial number was saved in clear text in a file in the "Windows" folder.

I don't see why people need to steal windows though, my windows 98 serial I got for 20$ worked with 95, 98 and ME.  I didn't need to buy another for a while. smile

All you had to do to get a key (and I think this is still true) is look on the bottom of any laptop or the back of any desktop - pirates I knew would just go to Frys or someplace similar to get the keys they needed - right off of demo machines.

I think most of the stuff is make in Commie China, not Taiwan! tongue
and speaking of Taiwan, most of their own company's fab is now in Commie China also.

Isn't this a weird/selfish world we live in, we are happy to announce how bad/terrible commie country/system is, but at the same time we/consumer are happy to buy our product "from cheap sock to MacBook" produce by cheap labor from those commie country due to their crappy system.

Re: Windows XP Warning Stickied on Your Desktop

Thats because the Chinese know that communism wont work by itself ..they want all our money, so theyll use thier "natural resources" (ahem, read 1 billion people) to do the worlds cheap manufacturing labor, and keep using the moniker of "Communism" to keep themselves in power..thats all it comes down to for them is staying in power.

I don't believe that's true.

The CD key is stored in the registry; there is no attempt to hide it. If you bought from an OEM, it was probably printed on the side of your case anyway...

Re: Windows XP Warning Stickied on Your Desktop

Or...people using copies of XP could turn off the automatic updates and the reminders for them.  I'm running an OEM copy of 2000 and it works well enough most of the time...except for the fact it's as ugly as all hell and a bitch to get set-up (that's where Ghost comes in handy incase of a problem big_smile )

I'm skipping XP and will plop vista on my x86 box once it's been out for a little while.

Re: Windows XP Warning Stickied on Your Desktop

We run the 'gold' release of Windows XP - no SPs or security updates so far as I can tell. I've used my machine for over a year without problems, and regularly (read: more often than I should!) use MSIE without issue. Just shows that if you're tucked-up behind a corporate firewall and don't visit warez or porno sites, even unpatched Windows users *can* survive unscathed.
