Hollywood - you want to change the world?

SUV sales are down.
They became very popular in the 90s - largely because every hollywood star and their brother had to have a hummer - resulting in a trend of people wanting the rugged off-road look even though they never went off road.

For all those hollywood stars that like to dabble in politics - here's an idea:

Buy hybrids. You can afford them.
But don't only buy they - drive them. Drive them everywhere, be seen in them.
Start a trend that will actually help this country.

If you don't - stay out of politics.

Follow up question:  If arnold doesn't drive a hybrid, does that mean that he needs to step down as governor?

makes me want a hybrid with some phat chrome shoes on it.
a sled that would be a veritable chick magnet.

the downside is the thumpity thumpity 10Kw amps  pushing all those woofers rattling the little thing would drain the battery with each thump.

SUVs are popular because people in Hollywood own Hummers? Can you substantiate that bizzare statement with anything?

I could bore you with a philosophical tirade about freedom and tyranny, or try and explain to you what new horizons are suddenly open to me, but I doubt you would understand and if you did it might frighten you.  That amuses me.

Of course, nobody bought a Bronco or a Suburban before Hollywood made them popular.

weren't the rather fast foreign sports cars. RR's, Bentleys, and Town Car type vehicles more the trend pre-SUV?
none noted for their fuel economy.

Holleywood sets the fashion trends.
People who need SUVs need them.
Most of them were purchased because they were "cool". Do you deny this?

Hell - most of them really aren't that great off road, not real off road anyway. They are fine for dirt roads - but really suck where there is no road.

It'd be nice to see it substantiated.  I get the feeling that most of the soccer moms bought them to fulfill the roll of a minivan or station wagon without being a minivan or station wagon.

Right, and why would they want an Oldsmobile Bravada or Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer than a minivan or station wagon?

Uh, welcome to 2002. Many Hollywood people have been buying and driving hybrids for years (check here--scroll down to the Celebrities section--for some examples). And please don't say that a few examples don't show a trend: if you ask me for a list of all of the celebrities who drive hybrids, then I shall--equally unreasonably--ask you for a list of Hollywood celebrities who do not. I do not track the driving habits of celebrities, and--I suggest--most people share this apathy.

Jesus frickin' christ, who gives a flip?

lol

SUV's have been popular for years, and I'm not convinced that this is due to the evils of "HOLLYWOOD."  If you were specifically addressing those who are outspoken on oil conservation and yet were driving SUV's then I'd say you had something worth complaining about.

I give a flip because Hollywood talks the greenpeace talk, save the rainforests, etc. - and then drives SUVs and gas guzzling performance cars - because they want the image, an image that the rest of the country emulates as best as they can afford.

call me crazy, but I thought OJ Simpson was the reason for SUVs success, seems to me the Ford Bronco slo-mo chase was the first time I'd seen a SUV on TV  shrug

I find this utterly bizarre.

First of all...can you draw a direct connection between someone who offers "greenpeace talk" and then drives an SUV?

Secondly...you are giving these people WAY too much credit.  Are you seriously suggesting that midwest soccer mom drives an SUV simply because Britney Spears does?

lol

Come to Texas...every-other car is a huge pickup truck.  Who's to blame there?  The country music industry?

Some actors/actresses have purchased Hybrids already.  They all say they "love them."

Cameron Diaz and Wyatt Erp at least.

Like I said before: I don't track the driving habits of Hollywood stars, mostly because these are insignificant. Why do you?

Oh, look: some of them do drive Priuses to the screenings. There are people who are using Priuses in their "green" campaigns. Here is another article commenting on how fashionable Priuses have become in Hollywood:

[snip]
While the steep purchase price (approximately double that of comparable small car) makes it uneconomical in terms of fuel cost savings; for the rich and famous its about more than the hip-pocket.

Celebrities just love them, the new-car manager of the local Toyota dealer in Santa Monica said.

We are the number one Prius dealer in the United States with demand almost doubling in the past few months, he said.
[snip]

Now, how about making a connection between you being unaware of this and the influence of celebrity driving habits?

Re: Hollywood - you want to change the world?

Sure - there may be a few.
Holleywood is a generalization.

What the smurf do most hollywooders drive to the screenings?

I can give a few examples of 6,000 year old earth conservative christians who are gay and proud of it (one of them is actually quite a decent scholar on the Book of Daniel) - yet it is not incorrect to say that conservative chrstians believe homosexuallity is wrong - the generalization is true.

It is also true that Holleywood is extremely liberal - yet doesn't live what they preach, and that is the point I am getting at.

I guess it is the fact that they are liberal that causes your blindness.

Re: Hollywood - you want to change the world?

I would presume that most hollywood celebs would take.... a limo to their screenings.

edit:  And it would be nice if you could point to examples of these liberal hypocrites.  That is, a big name (or at least not b-list) celebrity who drives an SUV while also saying that SUVs are bad and everyone should drive hybrids.
