Re: MACBOOK

Do you think it'll still be the cheap looking opaque plastic they've been using since the G4 ibooks? I'm thinking about upgrading my G3 iBook, but I can't stand the look of the cheap plastics with the new ones.

I am *so* getting a black MacBook, though.
[wait...shared video memory? Blech!]

Aside from that, this is an overall upgrade from my 12" PowerBook G4:
- Built-in iSight (which I will use)
- Superdrive (mine is the Combo drive version)
- Larger, higher res display
- Gigabit ethernet (mine is currently 10/100)
- Magsafe connector
- Built-in support for Front Row (plus remote)
- 2GB max RAM (mine is currently maxed @ 1.25GB)
- Harder-to-ding plastic casing (my beautiful aluminum PB got dinged by my clumsy teenager!)
- Ability to dual-boot into Windows if needed

The only thing I'll be losing is the 100GB HD I've installed. And I'd like to have an expansion slot, but since I don't currently have one, I won't be missing out on that, either.

Can anyone tell me how much impact the shared video is going to have, compared to the 64MB ATI Radeon Mobile I'm using now? The only gaming I'll be doing is World of Warcraft, but I may be using it to troubleshoot Final Cut Studio for some clients.

There not horrible at gaming, but not great either. Look at the Core Duo Mac Minis. There almost the exact same technology.

(I know it is crappy but is the macbook worth 120% more than the Dell?)

If the Apple had a crippled processor, a stripped down version of OS X with less capabilities, 20 gigs less hard drive space, no built in wireless, no built in webcam, and no iLife suite the comparison would be more valid.  Don't get me wrong...I wish the entry level one was less expensive.  But you can't compare that $499 piece of smurf to the MacBook.

Now this...

http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/ … s&fb=1

...is something a little more comparable.  It still doesn't include the built-in webcam or iLife suite, and the memory isn't as fast as what the MacBook has, but the display is larger.  That makes the MacBook about 25% more.

Apple has definitely packed this thing full for the price.  But a Core Solo version at around $800-900 would have been nice.

... oh and the 15.4" MBP w/2.16 is now 2499 and the 1.83 MBP option no longer exists.

So, who's getting a MacBook?

The price is fine(white one), consider it does come with CoreDuo 2ghz. 512 is ok but having it in 2x256 is really bad decision.

Re: MACBOOK

My point was a core solo without the isight and a 40gb drive would be an excellent entry level unit.  I know it isn't the apple way but when you declare something affordable the least you can do is make it affordable.

Re: MACBOOK

This is just the machine I've been waiting for, shared memory isn't a big problem any more as far as I'm concerned.  The Intel 950 performs at about the same level as the mobile version of the radeon 9000 (if I remember Correctly), I don't game on the go much so it's not an issue to me.
I do like the Mini DVI port (BIG selling feature for me) ,the dual core processor, a decent resolution display, and 2Gb of max memory is just more good news.

I want to see what kind of battery life this thing gets before I trade in my pc notebook and retire my G3 for one.  Other than that I agree that charging more for a colour option is stupid on Apple's part.

When has Apple ever done RAM correctly? (They're starting to tick me off in this area.)

Wow now you need Polaroid-glasses if you want to use the MacBook outside in the sun. I wonder if they are included...confused

Due to the integrated graphics, performance is best when split on two chips.  Just like the Mac mini

It will handle 1080i HD video, more than the 64 MB ATi Radeon Mobile that you (and I) have now.

In other words, you will see better performance.

The explanation of the glossy display:

Apple Store wrote:

Display
At no extra charge, you can choose a glossy widescreen display that lets you view graphics, photos, and videos with greater color saturation

Most consumers love extra saturation.

I have to admit, the Dells I've seen with the glossy hi-res screens have beautiful color. So I look at the glossy display as a mixed blessing.

Damn, I thought I'd be first to complain about the $200 price for black paint. I keep looking for some hidden spec difference, like a better video chip or something. Ridiculous. Get 1 gig of ram and a bigger hard drive for still less money than a black finish. Weird.

I definitely wouldn't buy one (for me at least - the Gateway is for the hubby).  Of course Apple probably realizes this, forcing me into upgrading to a MacBook Pro instead of saving a bundle on a MacBook.

It's a conspiracy!!!!!
