OK, that statement just struck me as weird. Whenever I hear that term bandied about, I usually think "soccer mom" as the source. Then I think of what (little) I know about you, reference your avatar (past and present) mentally, and it has a whole new meaning.

I said earlier, it is due to the integrated Intel graphics.  Just like the Mac mini.

The MacBook Pro has a dedicated graphics card.

Re: MACBOOK

As for the glare with the glossy screens, I feel I should point out that the viewing angle on that kind of display is much wider than the traditional laptop screen.  It makes it really handy when my wife and I are traveling somewhere and want to watch a movie on her Compaq.

So while I understand the glare issue, we're used to it over here, and I'm thinking that Apple just released the replacement to my wife's laptop.

I was in the middle of convincing my self to buy one until I realized they do not have back lit keyboards…. cry

Did Apple ever stick a back lit keyboard in the iBook G4’s?

Any hope of a new revision of the MacBook getting a backlit keyboard?

Exactly.  I don't understand the concept:

"We've intentionally added glare and reflection to the screen.  Isn't that great!"

Wow now you need Polaroid-glasses if you want to use the MacBook outside in the sun. I wonder if they are included...confused

But now the screen is all shiny and pretty. It will grab the attention of consumers like never before! "oooooh! sha... sha... shiny..."

Re: MACBOOK

Wow!  Overall I really like it.  I was expecting integrated graphics, and honestly the Macbook Pro’s graphics are already so low end that anything lower wouldn’t make much of a practical difference from integrated for games.

So basically the Macbook is good for everything but games.  And (unfortunately) for the price there’s really no notebook that’s decent for games.  It’s got a good CPU, good hard drive space (for a notebook), FANTASTIC design IMO.

The screen is WAY too small for regular use IMO, but great for portability…and the screen doesn’t necessarily matter much because this SUPPORTS DUAL SCREENS at high resolutions, just like the Powerbook/Macbook Pro!  In other words it IS a real replacement for the 12” PowerBook in addition to the 12” iBook.  Plug it in to a monitor at work or at home, and the screen doesn’t matter.

Honestly, I’m really impressed.  Sony would charge you double that for something that IMO isn’t as sexy, and has the same hardware.  I'm suprised and impressed that the SLOWEST you can get it is 1.83GHz, and 2GHz is almost standard.  That's a VERY high end chip-second to the best really, and is probably what you'd get even in Dell's XPS M1730 (or whatever the number is).

You know what?  I guarantee that Apple will sell this to people who intend to only run Windows on it.  Worst case that means Apple gets the money for a Windows PC rather than Dell or Sony.  Best case, the person ends up using OS X too!  That WILL happen!

Only strange thing about it, as you guys mentioned…why does the black cost over $100 more?  I kept comparing it to an equivalent white one, trying to figure out the difference.  If I get one, I wasn’t sure which color-but for cheaper I’d definitely go white.

(And yeah, i think it would be great if they could have a stripped down version for <$1000 with a Core Solo, smallish hard drive, combo drive, etc.)

lol  So true.

Aside from the look (I personally don't like it), I also do not enjoy driving big cars.  Big cars include anything larger than a VW Jetta.  I currently have a MINI Cooper S, so it's just perfect for me.

Oh, and what's the hole on the front of the Macbook for?  It looks sort of like a headphone jack, but that's on the side.

In a way it seems like a good idea to have a small removeable jack instead of a full DVI/VGA port, if you're planning on connecting it every single day (seems like it might be real durable?)

Re: MACBOOK

Very tempting.  Seeing as I already have an iMac I can't justify buying one of these.  On a side note, the 2x512mb setup is actually cheaper ($100 option) than buying it yourself ($130 at most places).  You would definitely need the 1GB setup because of the shared VRAM.

You have got to be kidding me! Sorry, but not only do you have no idea what you're talking about, it sounds like you're trying to convince yourself that integrated is all right.

I have very mixed feelings about these computers. Processor-wise, these are awesome. Unfortunately, cheapest notebook to come with a dedicated graphics card is $2000? Come on, Apple! I wanted that $1500 MacBook with a dedicated card, but I guess I'll have to buy a MacBook Pro. Fortunately they also bumped those, which means I won't have to wait for their bump. At least with the educational discount it will be $1800. (and the difference between the top MacBook and bottom MacBook Pro changes to $400)

Edit: Wait, now the MacBook only has glossy screens? Must be the only kind/cheapest kind the manufactures make. Bah! That seals it!

I hate integrated graphics too, but for anything but games these things should fly.  I just meant that the Radeon x1600 in the Macbook Pro is already just kind of a mid to low end GPU, so anything lower is already too dated to run everything out there decently...so really if you're going to run games on it, you need the Pro anyway, so not that big of a deal that this has integreated.

And it's actually a good deal compared with comperable Windows laptops, which is very cool!

The iBook never had a PC Card slot, did it?  I'm not even sure the 12" Powerbook did.  Anyway, not surprising, and what would you use it for?  (Are there some kind of cellular modems basically that use it?)

Re: MACBOOK

The x1600 is a mid -high end graphics card.

The new iBooks look nice though... it's surprising to me that the Powerbooks don't have composite video output, but the iBooks do.

Also, the black MacBook looks kinda ugly to me. Is it a flat-black finish, or semi-glossy? The pics make it look flat, but I know how hard it is to take pics of something like that.
