glossy screens - good or bad
If you are looking straight at a glossy screen is glossy better than non-glossy or the same?
If you are looking at an angle at a glossy screen - good or bad?

Straight on, no glare, and no dust I have found that the glossy screens are better.

I was surprised to hear that other manufacturers have been doing this. I'm very interested to see one in person!

From pics online, this seems like a different glossy screen that you see on Xbrite Sony stuff. I would have to see one in person to determine how good/bad they really are.

Re: glossy screens - good or bad
Glare is the main reason for non-glossy monitors. What is lost in the clarity is more than made up by being able to see the screen under wider circumstances. In a darkened room in which the monitor is the among the brightest sources of light, glossy is best; but take that same screen and put in a room with a window, you'll spend all day squinting and/or adjusting the angle of the monitor.

I've seen ones with glossy screens and I prefer them. I didn't notice any glare issues but I'm sure they happen from time to time. The color is more vivid and images seem sharper on glossy screens, so I'm glad that Apple is offering them.

Bad. Colors are over saturated, so when you print them, they look great on screens, and nothing like the final output.
I guess it all depends on what you're doing with it.

Especially since the Cinema displays (used for showing clients) will NOT be glossy.

Depends completely on what you do with your notebook. There's no way I could work for more than a few hours on a glossy screen without feeling the urge to rip out my eyes.
They are very nice though if you're watching movies or some such.

At no extra charge, you can choose a glossy widescreen display that lets you view graphics, photos, and videos with greater color saturation.
Apple's LCDs which are NOT glossy, are SWOP certified.

I have been considering a laptop to use with my photography and should I get one it would be used outside a great deal for image previewing.
Seems like a glossy screan would be bad for outdoor use but I would have to see it in person.

Saw it today. Hate it. I've never really liked glossy screens though. I like the way my PB is. Glossy is just too reflective.

Having currently owned both a PowerBook with a matte screen and a Gateway with a glossy screen, the PowerBooks is MUCH easier to see outside.
It still isn't very visible, and in direct sunlight, I can barely read text. Definitely not for photo work.

Re: glossy screens - good or bad
Matte if you need print to color accuracy, the glossy screen simply allows ambient light to toy with the colors too much, I don't know if it's possible to get away from that regardless of what Schiller says, remember everything Apple uses is the best, according to Apple.
If I'm using the display at school we have blue overhead lights, at work I have yellow and at home I often work on the front porch or some of those very white CFMs. I personally think that glossy screens are meant to look great on the shelf but I've never found them comfortable for long periods of use.

Re: glossy screens - good or bad
Well, I have to say, I've seen many glossy screens before (mostly in Dell laptops), but the Apple one is the least reflective, and it's quite sharp. It would be great in the dark (barring the fact that there isn't a backlit keyboard, but whatever).

Re: glossy screens - good or bad
I've yet to sit in front of a glossy LCD, calibrate it, and print some spot colors. I'm reluctant to write them off, primarily because the luminance of non glossy LCDs tends to prevent certain colors, especially dark colors, from looking like they do on print.
I've had a few CRT diamondtrons that came with a special film coating that helped to make blacks more black. It wasn't perfect, but it worked fairly well.
But hey, screen to paper is never going to be perfect. One blasts RGB light at your face, the other reflects light of a material that has absorbed CYMK ink.
But that's what overprice pantone swatches are for.

Re: glossy screens - good or bad
While somewhat cool, they do have a glare problem. They have an anti-glare coating, but that just means that lights (such as overhead lights) show up as red/purple (towards the edges of the spectrum) rather than white. I personally wouldn't buy one for that reason.

Re: glossy screens - good or bad
Yeah, I definately don't like glossy screens. When I saw that as a featue I was kinda disappointed in Apple. Honestly, I wasn't sure what the screen was going to be like when I ordered my Powerbook, but I love the anit-glare. It is so nice. Honestly, I would hate the glare from the glossy screens. I mean, you can already see the glare in the photos of the MacBook.

I hate glare, so I don't see that I would but the MacBook unless I could forgo the Glossy lcd, but I will have to try it out.
I loved when my 36" CRT TV (glare) went out and I had an excuse to get a 40" LCD HiDef TV, and I looked at Plasmas but they all had glare. I like to be able to have sunlight come in through the windows when watching the TV or playing games.

Every 13" LCD that I've seen in a notebook has been glossy. Do they even sell ones that aren't glossy? It would seem strange, but that would explain why Apple wouldn't give you a choice. (like they do with the MBP)

Glossy screens have a "cheap" look to them, IMHO.

All I can say is, I'm glad it's optional. The day that they force them down our throats (hopefully never) is the day the we go up in arms about it.
