Re: MBP vs iMac
The desktop computer is always going to be the "better deal." Look at the prices: the iMac is as equipped if not better for every line (Good - - Better - - Ultimate) compared to the MBP, with the exception being the loss of the DL DVD burner and FW 800 on the "Ultimate" line for the iMac compared to the Ultimate MBP.
And the difference between the Hard Drive space for the pro laptop vs. the consumer desktop is unbelievable.
So unless you have to have the looks of the laptop or the portability that you get with one, go with the iMac. It is a better computer for just about everybody that will be using it, and it also costs less. Plus, with a laptop you have to buy a case for it, the extended warranty is much more expensive, and you will have to get a stand for the MBPs too because they get sooo hot.
Save the money, get a desktop with more RAM for your games and the extended warranty. And you'll still have money left over.

Re: MBP vs iMac
I second the iMac. Last year when I was in the market for a computer the iMac was a shining bargain among the lineup. Notebooks carry a huge surcharge for portability, something that you may not even need. And as already said, repairs, warranty, RAM, etc. is all more expensive with a notebook. What you get for the price is just fantastic with an iMac. It was that way with my G5 and even more so now. This is a fantastic computer.

if you need portable, go MBP. if you want the better value, go iMac.

Re: MBP vs iMac
Well, since I am also getting a new Mac...I say go MacBook/MacBook Pro. That is what I am going to do. I want to have the protability, even though I may not use it enough to justify the price. You mentioned audio. Do you mean Garage Band? Or will you be making audio recordings? If it's the latter, go 'Book because you could make good use of the mobility. On the other hand, 20" of iMac goodness is mighty tempting.......

So then you will probably just be using the softsynths/ virtual instruments. If that is the case, then you don't really need a 'Book. For me, there are a lot of times that I might want to go record audio somewhere, and portabilty would be really nice, but if it is all software based you can do it at your desk. Reason is pretty expensive, so if you saved some money and bought the iMac, you would have more left for the software. ::shrugs::

Re: MBP vs iMac
Buy a MB and a 17" iMac, thats the way I've gone! 2 computers are better than 1 and you dont need to worry about killing/loosing a $3000AUD MB Pro at school.

No, we're not. You can put those referrals in your sig, but I'd prefer it if you don't. Referral links in posts will be removed and reported to the referral program, which usually has an anti-spam policy. This may cost you your referral credit.

Re: MBP vs iMac
Another reason to get an iMac!
If you have an iMac, check out iGo (www.raindesigninc.com/igo.html), its starting at $333 for the sitting version and it's soo cool.I'm gettin one!
By the way, that's the standing version. The sitting version is a bit smaller and has wheels/casters
on the bottom instead of the stands. It's real cool! The standing version is $666.00,
but you can use a higher chair for it.
EDIT: There's one for the mac mini and the iMac G5 or Intel iMac comes with a rain design turntable
on the top to make your iMac spin.

That's a lot of money for something with 0 table space. I like a multifunction piece of work furniture.

My dad used to use a door on two saw horses.
Personally, I prefer the floor.
