Need a bag....
Well as the title suggests I need a bag, that is backpack. I just ordered a MacBook and this will be my first laptop. I am very interested in buying a backpack to hull my MB around. The main reason for wanting one is because I'm in college and carry books around and other essential things, plus I love the feel of a backpack, and I don't know if I would like to carry a little tote or sachel whatever they are called around. So from all of you who have laptops and have backpacks that are meant for a laptop, if you could please share with me what you have and why you like it, or if you just want to help look for one that has just came out that looks promicing. And thank you for any help.

Don't get something that looks like a computer is in it. You don't want to attract the attention of a potential thief.

I've seen the Crumpler and it looks pretty nice. It actually looks like a backpack you would take hiking or something. Which is rather nice. Is there anyone out there that has one that could tell me if they are worth the money. Plus any other bags out there that are good?

Re: Need a bag....
I'm actually in the same boat. This is my first portable Mac and I want to tote it in style. What would be PRIME is a bag that could handle my Mac Book, Nikon D50, an extra lens, ipod, a cable or two, and a book or three with perhaps some detatchable components so if I werent carrying my camera around that day, I could just painlessly detatch that part. I know I know! I've watched too many Borg episodes of Star Trek, it's a pipe dream! Just thought I'd throw it out there.

Re: Need a bag....
Are you against getting a sleeve and using a normal bag? How much more protection (if any) is tehre in a backpack spicificly made for laptops?

Re: Need a bag....
I'm also in the same situation. One thing that I noticed in hauling around my laptop in a sleeve within a backpack was that pressure is exerted on the laptop, pushing the screen into the edge of the keyboard.
Lots of apple laptops get little scuffs on the LCD when they're closed, from the keys, or in the case of the macbook, the edge of the keyboard depression. When my laptop has no pressure against it (pushing it even further closed) then the marks don't show up. I just don't want the screen being pushed against the keyboard for such a long period of time that the scuffs become permanent scratches.
So i'm looking for a backpack where the backpack contents hang away from the laptop (like with teh swiss army "maxxum" or whatever it was called)
and around $50. if that's realistic.

Definitely get a crumpler.
See http://www.crumplerbags.com/
They are incredibly well made, come in a lot of different sizes and are great to use. And they are probably one of the best looking bags on the planet. Not that cheap though.

The site is offbeat, a lot like the company. If you go into a crumpler store with a busted bag (either through wear and tare, or getting knocked off your bike by a car, they will fix it at no cost. They have a serious amount of pride in their product. The bags are made from really strong material, they don't look like laptop bags so they won't get you mugged and my bag fits my MacBook Pro like a glove (they have lots of different sizes).
The whole thing started as bicycle couriers that couldn't get bags to last, so they made there own.
I have never met someone who didn't love their crumpler.
They ran the coolest promotion I have ever seen with their 'Beer for Bags' sale. You looked on the list, saw what beer to buy and then took the beer into the store and swapped it for a bag. Prices were ridiculously good, the beer cost about half what the bag normally would.
In Adelaide Australia the police confiscated all the beer from the sale, which was pretty sad, as it was supposed to be for their Christmas party. So I don't think Adelaide will be getting that sale again, unlike Crumpler Stores everywhere else.
It is the first promotion that has ever made me laugh that hard...

Re: Need a bag....
All of these bags look good, but I havent seen anything that does the laptop and camera bag schtick well, with style, and without being too bulky. The Crumpler December Quarter is the closest I've found, any other suggestions?

Re: Need a bag....
I just ordered the Altec Lansing iM9 bag... I'll let you know how well that fairs up to a dedicated laptop bag. I already have an incase laptop sleeve for my MBP, so I'll just stuff it in there.
