Another scandal?

Well, I don't know if this will turn into another scandal but it goes to tell you that there is no much difference between the Republicans and Democrats in power. They both do things like this:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12903856/?GT1=8199

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - A congressman under investigation for bribery was caught on videotape accepting $100,000 in $100 bills from an FBI informant whose conversations with the lawmaker also were recorded, according to a court document released Sunday. Agents later found the cash hidden in his freezer.

Gosh, a crooked politician. Whooda thunk.

No, neither side has an exclusive hold on crookery, that's for sure. Honest politicians are few and far between. REALLY far between. And yes, they come in all flavors too. Just hardly as often.

Re: Another scandal?

I would say the big difference is that I have not heard one single Democrat defending Jefferson. The outrage from the right when Delay was indicted was deafening.

Crooked politicians exist, yes. But Democrats don't have a culture that insists that it's ok.

Yup.  Let's just forgive him 'cause he's a DEMOCRAT.

As such he MUST have done it with a noble motive.

It will quietly die out and fade away like most other Dem scandals.

The sin of corruption is universal.
The culture of corruption will be revealed by the nature of his defense, if any.

EDIT: I see that's what Jondaris said.

Of course.  That's because, as you know, Democrats are beacons of morality.  As such, this must not be true.

I was just responding the the above apologists for everything Democrat.  Never fear, I'd do the same to Republican lovers as well.  I'm pretty much equal opportunity on such matters.

Yeah, who'd imagine that a state that elected Edwards twice would have crocked politicians

Perhaps I'm misreading the board, but I don't see anyone apologizing for corrupt politicians -- these scumbags abuse our system at the average citizen's expense. Jefferson deserves a lengthy prison sentence and public humiliation on national television for his crimes.

From my point of view, the original poster asserted that Democrats are just as dirty as Republicans, yet Republicans get more press. The Democrats responded by pointing out that Jefferson is a low-level goon taking a bribe, whereas the recent Republican scandals have involved the Senate Majority Leader, the compromising of national security, and a vast conspiracy of corporate lobbyists wielding a disproportionate amount of power over conservative lawmakers.

In the end, the Republicans currently enjoy control over both sides of Congress as well as the Executive seat. Of course they're going to get nailed to the wall when they get caught with their pants down in a room full of Brazilian cabana boys.

Yeah, the doped-up Kennedy story slipped pretty quickly away.

But, again, if its corruption or criminal acts in the White House, that is a little more newsworthy and important, eh ?

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."  They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

You make the assumption that

a) I'm apoligizing for the guy's actions
b) I'm a democrat
c) I wasn't just trying to expose the original poster's alterior motives.

When I saw this, it just screamed to me that the op was trying to make the republicans/bush look better by saying "Look! The Dems are corrupt too!" While the dems may have corrupt members as well, bribery does not equal the wonderful things the republicans have been doing.

Yeah, the guy who took the bribes is a smurf.

Re: Another scandal?

The corruption in the Republican Party right now is systemic and widespread. The corruption in government likewise and similarly systemic, though to a lesser extent than the current GOP. The corruption in the Democratic party is mostly due to stupidity: nobody who understands our political system would bribe a federal Democrat right now, unless they're laying groundwork.

The real test will come when the Ethics Committee meets to slap him on the wrist. ANYONE want to lay odds that he will not be given the maximum? They don't hold wrong-doers to account for their actions. Notice I said "they". The Republicans won't do anything to him, neither will the Democrats in the Ethics Committee. At worst, he will be allowed to resign.
