I just preordered parallels desktop for mac

From lurking on these boards as well as digg I had heard mention of Parallels beta virtualization program for OS X. I dismissed it as probably being uber-beta and unstable. Well just for grins today i googled it, downloaded the recently released RC build, and installed XP SP2.

Wow. I cannot believe how good of a product this is, even in early form. The XP installer loaded FASTER under parallels than if I had booted my PC from the CD. In full screen, it runs as fast as my Athlon 2ghz PC does (thats all I have to compare it to). Who needs bootcamp? Unless you are playing games, this is perfect for anybody who needs to run certain software that is not available for OS X. I am so impressed that I just gave them $40. Now to install Kubuntu and learn linux!

Oh, and if you have an intel mac, the RC build is a free, fully functional trial, so give it a try.

Re: I just preordered parallels desktop for mac

Parallels, from what i've read, makes a great product. I hope they live on many years.

But supposedly, there's a change that the next release of OS X is going to have virtualization software built in.

To paraphrase the Duke "You believe 1% of the bright rumors and 99% of the dark ones and you'll do alright."

I think I'll wait until I hear from Apple before I say if virtualization is going to integrated in to the OS or not.

Re: I just preordered parallels desktop for mac

I been discussing the topic of virtualization on Leopard w/ other users on the boards, and have come to the conclusion that it's probably not going to happen.  I don't think Apple is necessarily in the business of supporting other OSes, not to mention the security risks, and support issues they'll have to deal with.  Thoughts?

Re: I just preordered parallels desktop for mac

More and more people are buying and loving Macs. To make this choice simply irresistible, Apple will include technology in the next major release of Mac OS X, Leopard, that lets you install and run the Windows XP operating system on your Mac. Called Boot Camp (for now), you can download a public beta today.

so there will at least be bootcamp built in, hopefully virtualization.

I hope what they do is bundle xen into OS X.
That would be cool.

Re: I just preordered parallels desktop for mac

To me, virtualization in Leopard has always seemed like more of a probability than a possibility.  Let's face it.  95% of the computing world uses Windows, at least 35% of whom absolutely detest Windows.  Built-in virtualization would be the perfect excuse to dump Windows, particularly if the virtualization supported graphics acceleration.

If virtuisation is built-in, ittle come turned off like the right-click on the mighty mouse...

Edit: Thus won't cause security issues to 99% of users.

The thought of virtualization built-in makes me cringe.  It would make OS X look like hell.  Apple has enough different UIs throughout the OS already.  We don't need Windows apps on top of it all.

Can I ask a dumb question here:

Will you need 2 seats of Windows to run parallels and boot camp?  Or can you legally and actually intall the same windows installation on both places?

Who knows, MS said that it was against the EULA to install it on one machine, uninstall it and then install it on my new machine. It phoned home and detected that there was a 'significant HW change', thus pirated. I've given up with MS.  Really it's just one big joke now!

Re: I just preordered parallels desktop for mac

You do need two different copies of Windows.  It is the same thing with Virtual PC.  Somehow, it is seen as a different computer, even though technically, it is the same machine.

Also, using Boot Camp and Parallels does require two different installs (read 2x the HD space) as they can't see each other.

Re: I just preordered parallels desktop for mac

The ability to boot from a real partition is on the Parallels roadmap.  I don't know if it will be in the final release, or a subsequent release, but it will allow you to run Parallels from your Boot Camp partition, killing both birds with one stone (HD space, and legal issues).

Though if you follow through with their instructions you call a 1-800 number and someone in India will ask for your CD key and then will give you a code to make everything ok.  And that's only if you've used up your number of activations (which is around 5 I think).

I am pretty positive MS licenses by the "instance". I know they do on servers where virtualization has been around quite awhile.
