Intel Core 2 Duo (Conroe) Official Ship Date!
July 23rd.
Looks like we may have the Mac Pros slightly before August, if not very very early August!

Yay. But aren't the towers waiting for Woodcrest which was announced just a few days ago? Or does Woodcrest fall under Conroe?

Re: Intel Core 2 Duo (Conroe) Official Ship Date!
Do you think apple will pass the savings onto the customer after intel lower's it's prices, or just pocket the difference?
I sold my desktop pc recently, and I'm stuck on this aging laptop. I'd love to buy a new intel mac, but I think I'd be better off waiting a couple of months...ggrrr, I hate the waiting game.

Woodcrest is for servers, and I believe shares a lot with Conroe.
I wouldn't be surprised if Apple had 2 version of the Mac Pro, 2 with Conroe, and one with Woodcrest to replace the Quad.

I would guess the Conroe would go into the mac pro and the woodcrest would go in the Xserve.

I would not be surprised in the least if they [read: MacPro] ship within a week of announcement. With regards to the MBPs, I have no idea.

Does Conroe have the same pinout as the vanilla Core Duo? Will I be able to upgrade my CD iMac?

iirc, there are reports that you can upgrade a Yonah to a Merom. I don't know about Conroe, since it really is a desktop chip, where Yonah and Merom (Core Duo and Core 2 Duo respectively) are laptop chips.

I don't think you will see Core Duo/Core 2 Duo in Apple PM, but rather the latest version of Intel multcore desktop/server cpu.

But, like on the wintel side of things, upgradability will be dependent on the motherboards. An EFI update may or may not be necessary (or, if necessary, may or may not be provided) to recognize the new chips. And it would probably have to come from Apple, not Intel.
There was a lot of orgasmic "INTEL!!! UPGRADE++!!!11" talk when we got socketed CPUs, but we're still at Apple's mercy when it comes to any upgrades worth doing - even if the Conroe and the Pentium M based chips use the same socket, which I doubt (At this point, LGA775 is so new that only Intel would be dumb enough to even consider abandoning it in favor of a new socket architecture - but they are Intel, which worries me.)
Upgrading from a Yonah to a Merom without any trouble would be nice - whether or not it actually works depends on how similar the chips are. If they're that similar, I guess it might not even be worth it unless you're starting with a core solo mini and popping in a 2+ Ghz dualie.

You're right, but I'm sure the hacker community won't sit by and do nothing. If people could get XP to boot on the machine without the help from Apple, there are going to be companies or hackers that get a CPU upgrade working.
Look at all the machines currently that Apple never intended to have upgraded, and all the upgrades available for them.

Actually I think you are right and not so right, Core 2 Duo Extreme is Intel cpu target at "gamer", not just "highest end intel desktop chip".
Yes you are right that the name Core 2 Duo/Solo will be use on both their future laptop and desktop, but the curve is we have 2 part to the name, the first part is Core 2 Duo and the second part is a number right behind the "Core 2 Duo" name, between the 4000s to 6000s for Conroe processors(desktop) and the 5000s to 7000s for Merom(laptop).

I think we're saying the same thing. Games are very CPU intensive. Hard core gamers are always going to want the highest-end CPU.
I stated that the Core 2 Duo Extreme is the highest end Intel desktop CPU, which can have many purposes (high end video editing, games, bioscience, etc).

There will always be a numbering scheme. There is one now with the Core Duo.

I LOVE the refurb section of the Apple store........both my PowerMac and Mini came from there....if I decide to buy a MacBook it will come from there also......so will my iTurd (sorry Pod) nano if I decide to pick one up
There is no reason to think the PM G5 replacements will be any less expensive than the current PM's None of the other Intel Macs have been cheaper as a matter of fact the Mini took a price hike
The best we can hope is that the new PM will actually use "PC" video cards.........I have a 7900GTX that wants a new home in a shiney silver PM case........
must... fight.. the... urge... to.... buy.... a..... refurb...... 30 cinema display............

What makes you think apple hasn't been getting these processors dirt cheap in the first place. Any product like this is always overinflated in price when it first comes out. Its to allure to those idiots that just have to have the new hotness when it comes out.
Games are not all that CPU dependant, but at the same time if the processor is too slow you will not get the best performance out of an expensive video card and sound card.
