NEW YORK -- State Comptroller Alan Hevesi publicly apologized Thursday for a "beyond dumb" remark about a fellow Democrat putting "a bullet between the president's eyes."

It was on all cable newscasts I saw, not just once, but over and over again.
Bad manners is always news. Apologies seem to be smugly tagged by weak minded folk as weakness, when, in point of fact, it takes courage for one to admit to making a mistake. Good manners seem to be in very short supply these days.

What?
Umm, no. I'm having a difficult time seeing where any comparison exists.
Lott was criticized for making a dumb joke that sounded racist in tone to some. Were Dean's comments either a "joke," or discriminatory?

Can someone remind me what Dean said? 'Cause I missed that one and am confused as hell.

I think that makes it a pretty big flap considering the nothingness of this dude's political position.

Hell Bratty, if you don't have a problem with him telling people the Dems think marriage should be between a man and a woman or think it was a veiled nod to the homophobes, I certainly don't.

Has the national Democratic party ever claimed that "marriage" for homosexuals was one of their platforms?
I've never believed so. I believe most Dems are opposed to any sort of national amendment forbidding gay marriage, but I've never looked to the DNC to be any sort of champion of homosexual rights.
As far as having "a problem," I really don't care for Dean and I think the fact that he was pandering to Robertson's crew is stupid.

I don't think so. I don't think they would make such a statement.

Appearing on the 700 is equivalent to taking the stage at a White Aryan Resistance meeting. Dean should have been pilloried for it.
But pointing out Dean's smurf up does not take anything away from the truly evil way Bush and his bunch are attempting to paint gays as the source of all moral problems in our country.
It is not hyperbole to point out a strong parallel between this tactic of Bush's and a certain other leader in another country and a certain religious minority. Some ways of thinking just logically lead to death camps and slaughter.

I think the Repubs are stupid for doing this. Do they even have enough votes to put it up for a full Senate vote? I believe you need 60 votes to do that.

2/3rds is required, in both houses.
Then of course there is the arduous process of having to have 3/4 of the states ratify such a thing.
Personally I hope they get the amendment passed and on ratification road.
The left in this country needs a good solid kick in the ass and this would be a good one.

It's still a stupid thing to do.
I heard a CNN commentator say that people are now aware that it's just a vote-pulling stunt and that the contrast with more serious issues is going to create problems for the Reps.
Aw, he's no fun, he fell right over.

Yes I realize that, but won't it backfire if they can't even get it put to a vote? Doesn't it make them look ineffectual and useless?
Hell, do they even have all their own senators on board?

Re: There Must Be Another Election Coming Up...
I suspect part of the repubs plan is to build public disgust with the process to the point only the "true believers" bother to vote.
Its no coincidence that the rise of republicans to majority status was concurrent with voter turnout falling to historic lows. The wacky right is not anything like a majority view in this country but they get out and vote so when the center stays home, they win.
All the republicans need to do is discourage the decent folks and they get re-elected.

Re: There Must Be Another Election Coming Up...
So, Bush proposes an amendment to the Constitution, sort of hides his speech in another "venue" and then does not take questions from the press. Sounds like a chicken to me. http://pageoneq.com/news/2006/bush_060506.html

All it means is that Bush is trying to pretend that he really cared about those "christian" values he trouted out before the right wing evangelicals in the last election when he made it appear as if anti-gay marriage was as serious an issue as Iraq and Social Security to him and the Republicans so they needed their vote to help make it happen. Its lip service as if to say "um, I have to say this for those whackos I got to vote me in office, we might need them in a couple months, so shut up and let me say this, and no comments afterwards either."

They don't need to actualy do anything, just sound like they want to. That'll guarantee them plenty of votes even if it never gets past talking stage.

Come on, is it really that bad? Will numbskulls vote for these guys even if they're just going through the motions in an obvious play for support? I mean, it's so damn transparent, they're not even trying to dress it up anymore!
