tricking out a B&W/300

i had a Flash of Insight™ to aquire a blue and white g3 and mod it till i feel satisfied. so, i compiled a list of parts to add, and i was wondering if y'all would critique my list, to safeguard the mac from melting from all the heat, and to tell me if i made a poor choice of parts or not. okthx. all these parts are from OWC. the mac will be from shreve systems, hopefully.

Only one question.  What will you be doing with it?  If you plan on using it for general computing "stuff" then your choices are good.  If you plan on using Photoshop & Altivec stuff heavily, then a G4 might suit you better even though it runs at a lower speed.

Re: tricking out a B&W/300

Hello All, I just wanted to put my 2 cents in here and let it go, I have that same Q and A session a few months ago, what would happen if and I have not been able to contend with the ramafacations so far, BUT! I am do real Good!. I have not One!, but 2!, Count them 2 B&W G3's, #1 is a G3 300just a run of the mill, Great MAC! with 3 Sticks of 128Mb memory need's a few tweeks and it is a Wonderful machine, #2, is G3 350 Overclocked Chip, an extra 50 somthing making it a 400 somthing, He he, DVD Drive, 80 Gig HDD, OS X.2.8, 750+ Mb ram, other wise Stock, with Kensington Pilot Mouse, Mod #72127 and a Macally Ikey Keyboard, LOVE it! I have a internal Telaport 56K modem. I have dial up internet Slow!,  but works, I hope to add a Cable to the stable and have some real fun , but for now Sow poke DialUp, I want to add a Better Video card, ATI 9600 PCI 128Mb Card, a faster larger Drive, in the 160 - 300 Gig, 4 Gig Ram, and a few other fun and nice things, I can not afford a G5, SOoooo! here I am working my self in to a frenzy of Fun and learning with My Macs, OH!, BTW, I just bought a Builder Powerbook G3 400 Firewire, and I am doing the same with it, LOL, may seem strange to lob all this time and money into these older machines but I drive a 1989 SAAB 9000 Turbo and just laugh at all these silly people that cram them selves in to a small sub compact just for that all mighty "Better Gas Mileage" when my SAAB get just as good MPG as theres if not better and I get there in style. to me it is just what i want to do, I hope I have not affended any one, just me thoughts, Have a Happy Mac, See you latter Guy's and Gals.

also, if i got a g4 card, it would add a couple hundred bucks to the mess. im not planning to do anything intensive beyond maybe garageband or reason or something like that.

what I truly meant was that for the investment you are making with upgrades, you can find plenty of G4's that meet or beat the specs of what you are putting together.

and as you stated adding a G4 to the G3 box, you are verging on the price of a G5.. which would be better yet.

unless of course this whole exercise is to brag on what you tricked out. lol

One of iLife's requirements is G4 or better CPU, so if you're serious about Garageband, that makes your choic for you.

Re: tricking out a B&W/300

Uh, if you're serious about garage band, just get a Mini, even a G4 one. That B&W is gonna crawl compared to a Mini at the same price....

BTW, I was playing just today with my sister's hand-me-down B&W I set her up with a few years ago: 832MB RAM, G4 450, Radion 7000 PCI, 12 GB HDD. It crawls (noticeable lag when drawing windows (Panther)), and even a faster CPU won't help that much. As has been noted, unless it's the project you're in it for, then just get a newer computer with a faster bus, AGP video, etc.

Re: tricking out a B&W/300

Our local Mac shop had used G5s for $700.

If you have not yet bought the G3 from Shreve, I have a bunch of them. I'll give you a better deal.

Dear god, I would hope so.
Shreve is a rip-off.
Who pays those prices?
