AMD Slash Prices
AMD has kicked into price cuts today by slashing prices on 939 and AM2 sockets.
Distributor prices seen by the INQ show that the Athlon 64 3000 will cost $89, the 3200 $99, the 3500 $109, and the 3800 $139. In the last case, that's a 50 per cent drop.
All socket and AM2 sockets are rebated, we understand from sources close to AMD Asia.
Looking forward to this if it's correct, though it would seem to fit with the reported upcoming profit warnings at Intel. I take it that "all" includes dual core, meaning I should have enough left over from a 4400 for the 2GB memory I've been hankering after. I love being a consumer

Saw that. Since the upgrade isn't assembled yet, I about cried.
Oh well. Some'll buy 2GBs of DDR2 for AM2, then in late '07... DDR3 for the desktop. It's computing.

Books is out to make me cry more.
It won't work, I tells ya! I'll still have better graphics, and sound, and... and...

Better sound, definitely. See [MA] Officers. Creative X-Fi.
And a 7900GT CO does not beat an X1900XT for features or speed (F.E.A.R., anyone?).

Re: AMD Slash Prices
I'm seriously considering the X1900XT over the 7900GTX. I don't *need* to upgrade my card for some time yet, so I'm waiting to see what happens to the prices as we go toward Christmas. One thing I've noticed is that hunting around, you see a lot of posts about NVidia cards that have gone kaput in a short space of time.
Maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but it seems to me that this isn't the case with ATI cards?
As for DDR2, I can't afford the new motherboard or the memory, so that'll be a couple of years up the line for me. In some ways it's a good thing I don't have as much money as I'd like - I can see myself becoming a component junkie pretty easily

Re: AMD Slash Prices
The nice thing about eVGA cards is that they have a lifetime warranty. Even if you kill the card overclocking or it just randomly died, they'll replace it.
To all the X1900XT fans, the 7900GT is $150-$200 less, and is money that could be put toward something that adds a bit more value.

I do consider value, Books, or I wouldn't have gotten "only" a 3700+ (which, I think, also OCs like a demon, tho that wasn't my prime consideration; price was). ATi's X1000s simply have features no NV card yet has, that I do prize.

Looks like we'll need to wait until Conroe drops to reap the benefits... from the price, and from the possibility of picking up a Conroe platform instead. Hmm...

Re: AMD Slash Prices
Nice find Books! I was hoping the cuts would come sooner, but for up to 50% on the dual cores I can wait a few weeks. My 4400 isn't showing as being up for a reduction yet, but at those prices, I can live with a 4600

Re: AMD Slash Prices
I'm sure I can live with mine until Xmas at least, and even then a DX10 card (assuming selling old stuff) might be more important. Meanwhile for 1600x1200 or 1680x1050 and all image quality features, my CPU/GPU balance should be good- I'm more about visuals and smooth framerates than ugly 100 f/s gaming. 2GBs RAM and 512 VRAM should handle anything; and at least until Conroe, even my CPU will outgun Books'.
Not that that's ever relevant...
