Re: Call of Duty 2 Freakin' Rocks

To answer Reefdog's question about AI, the only game I have seen where "cover fire" actually works is Close Combat: First to Fight. You can keep guys heads down and order your teammates to do things or go places while the baddies have their heads down. Or vice versa you can order your teammates to provide cover fire while you do stuff.

You should really check it out, its an awesome FPS. LAN play with the campaign was the best multiplayer experience I've ever had. And of course the graphics, sound and ragdoll physics  all rule. Seeing guys do swan dives out of windows I've just launched a grenade into never gets old. big_smile

Re: Call of Duty 2 Freakin' Rocks

I might only be the demo or me not finding the right setting but there is only one firemode on the Thompson in CoD2 ie full auto. It had two settings in CoD1.

Now, where in the name of... did I put that thing that I forgot what it was and why I was looking for it?

Re: Call of Duty 2 Freakin' Rocks

Full-auto is the only way I've ever used any of the machine guns. If I wanted single shot, I would pull out the rifle.

My favorite combo is the Gewhr (sp?) 43 rifle (accurate, semi-auto with 10-round clips) and the MP44. There's usually plenty of ammo around for them, although the MP44 ammo can get scarce. At times in CD1, I would use the MP44 as my rifle and the MP40 as my m.g.

Pros & Cons in both. BAR has a slower rate of fire, a longer reload time and a max ammo count of 180 (I think) but is more accurate and has better knock down power.

I like the Tommy because of it's smaller profile. It eats less screen and there's less of a chance for baddies to be hidden behind it. I wish all FPS games would allow you to turn off the weapon view. I hate when distanced enemies are hiding behind my arm/weapon. I know what weapons I have just gimme the crosshairs, dangnibbit!. Add one point to UT and kin. wink

Ran into another b!tch lvl on Vet. The Silo. OMFG! Three hours to complete. Capture buildings A-E and then fend off the counter attack by picking off mortar crews from the top of the silo (aka stay alive for XX minutes while reinforcements arrive). The end wasn't bad just have your sniper A game on but clearing buildings stuffed with Nazis was brutal with check points only after you clear a building. I learned if you retreat/fall back the building resets and you have to start all over agian. Only after the check point (clearing it) does it stay empty. Doesn't help with useless AI friends…that was the most aggravating part. There were parts where I was surrounded by 6 'buddies' and Germans got close enough to pistol whip me. Gee thanks guys just let the enemy walk into our foxhole.

Also irritating...not having the ability to throw nades back. The AI does it all the time. In The Silo the Sgt. offers tips about using nades to help clear the building. Well yay! That only works if the nades stay in the building.

COD2: $50
Xbox 360: $400
Getting pistol whipped by a German while six of your buddies watch: Priceless. wink big_smile tongue

Re: Call of Duty 2 Freakin' Rocks

The silo was another level that I stopped playing on vet. The mortar crews are much more accurate and they spawn in faster. I kept getting blown up with 30 sec. to go.

I was there too but I only had three crews on the board so it was easy to figure out where that shell was coming from. I had much less trouble with the mortars than clearing the houses.

Seriously, I hear the BAR is accurate enough to use as a pseudo-sniper, with full auto to fall back on. Sounds like fun.

Oh, I about went nuts trying to clear those houses. It took me quite awhile to figure out a good strategy, then awhile to actually implement it.

With the 360 versoin there isn't a toggle for single/auto. Machine guns are FA always. Another reason I don't use the BAR much is lack of ammo. Once one drops you might get lucky to get one full reload per map. If one drops at all. Tommys & M1s are much more abundant. More than once I've switched to German guns because the lack of ammo. What can I say...I play slow and shoot everything. wink

Re: Call of Duty 2 Freakin' Rocks

I run for the Hun weapons just as soon as my ammo gets low and those bolt-action rifles hit the dirt real quick.

One interesting bit is that I started to watch a History Channel show about WWII weapons just the other day, because I wanted more information about those rifles. I feel like I know them now.....

I'm looking forward to COD3!

Re: Call of Duty 2 Freakin' Rocks

is anyone running this game on a 17" PB G4 1.67/128RAM....etc?... I really want to get this game but can't really afford to get a new MAC...

I was just wondering if anyone is in my similar situation and if they have the game, how well does it run?

I doubt it. I think there's a demo out. Try searching MacGameFiles.

I wonder how the smoke grenade effects are on your setup.  That's a pretty major part of the game.  The rest of the particle stuff is just eye candy (much-loved eye candy, mind you), but the smoke is integral to not getting your ass blown off on some levels!

Smoke grenades are a big hit on rendering, hence video-related framerate. Many MP servers shut them off for that reason.

Re: Call of Duty 2 Freakin' Rocks

I have figured out an easier way to finish "The Brigade Box". At the end of the level, you are told to run out from the house you are defending, across two fences and two yards crawling with Germans in order to stick a bomb on a tank. Why would any commander would send only one guy out on such a suicide mission?

After being killed many times trying to sprint across the yards (smoke grenades help), I decided to try something new next time. Right after the commander calls in on the radio, you get a message of an oncoming onslaught. Instead of staying in the building, run directly across the yards to the house that you passed through to get to the HQ. There are rooms there that you can hunker down in. The guys in the house will do just fine without you.

Germans will come in ones to threes to attack you. Shift from room to room, throw grenades and keep your gun loaded. Eventually some Brits will come in to support you. Usually by this time you have gotten the message to bomb the tank. Go out the house, head left and around and crouch-run up to the tank.

Now to try it on the highest setting.....

I think it makes more sense if you simply accept the your commander and squad members hate you for being such a jammy bastard.
