Re: Call of Duty 2 Freakin' Rocks

Well I'm now stuck. So stuck and frustrated that I've called it quits for a bit. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Currently I'm contemplating restarting the mission because I'm not sure if the current guns I have are the right guns for the job.

SPOILERS!!!!

Sorry I don't know the battle/level name but it's easy to describe. English campaign on Vet where you start to take back a town. Near the end you come across a bunch of wounded troops. You and the Irish red head McGregor are ordered to go back through the town and get an abandoned truck you passed when the mission first started. Once there McGregor drives and you're in back ready to defend. In the back there is a Panzerfraust...fore shadowing the impending doom... Once I made it far enough to actually see the Tiger come through the hedge row. But mostly get caught on the first and second set of Jerry troops. There are 6-8 guys all with rifles pointed at you.

Funny I can remember the bot's name McGregor but not map names...must be the Irish accent. wink

If I have to hear "Damn this lorry it's messed up" one more time...really that is THE most irritating to sit through the animation over and over. Yeah I know it has a full tank and drives for shi..... Can I drive!?! Prudy please with sugar.

End Spoilers

Re: Call of Duty 2 Freakin' Rocks

Yeah, that's an annoying sequence. Even doing it they way I detail below, I still end up hearing it a few times.

I usually have an MP44 and a G43 by that point. I'll exchange the 43 for the 'faust and ready the 44, standing up facing the front of the truck. As soon as I get a clear shot, I aim for the stack of red petrol cans beside the first building that has troops near it. When they explode, it usually takes out most of the Huns on the back side of the building.

THEN I CROUCH DOWN.

Facing the rear, I shoot any Huns that come around to snipe at me, but I mostly ignore them until I can get a good shot at the tank. There is a point near the end of the level where it presents the more vulnerable side to you. I've also taken it out by hitting it twice at the front. That's when McGregor says "I owe you one, Davis. Hell, I owe you one, TWICE!"

I crouch too but always seem to get hit by the second set near the wrecked truck.

When you blow up the benzene are you using the RPG or a gun? I've been using a gun...saving the RPG for the tank.

Re: Call of Duty 2 Freakin' Rocks

I use the gun (one thing I really like about the MP44 is that it's almost as accurate as a rifle).

That second group is the tricky part. You may be able to pop them with an RPG to slow them down. You'll only need one or two for the tank. Another idea is to toss a smoke grenade out, but it'll be tough to place it where it'll do you any good - it may not generate enough smoke in time to help. You would have to toss it very far VERY early....before you even get in range of the building with the petrol cans.

Smoke is my secret weapon for playing COD on Veteran.

Re: Call of Duty 2 Freakin' Rocks

You could also scatter a bunch of frag grenades around as you round the end of the wall. The Germans will run to avoid them, giving you a break. I don't think they pursue the truck very far.

QFT! Yes! Smoke FTW!!! I just wish it was as easy to replenish has nades. What the hell Jerrys didn't use smoke.

Thanks for the help. I'll give it another go...this time with different guns. Using smoke in this would be tough because of the time delay between throwing and effective cover.

'Bout the only time I can find replacement smoke is on Hill 4000. I guess if it was plentiful, you'd be tossing them like candy!

Done! The war is won on Veteran difficulty level. Whew! 13 of 13 achievement points awarded.

The hardest parts...any level with a tank in it... and there are a few.

Re: Call of Duty 2 Freakin' Rocks

That is quite an achievement. I would skip stuff when it got more tedious than fun. I was trying last night to storm the church full of Germans (a British level) and got disgusted by the grind.

I like trying to find other ways - there is a point where you are supposed to fight off several waves of attackers in a barn using a commandeered 42. I got tired of getting wacked half-way through, so I snuck out of the barn (the rest of the Brits don't like you, anyway), ran along the back wall and jogged over to the farmhouse. I could snipe at the Germans from the upper windows. The game didn't seem to care if I was in the barn or not!

Now all you have to do is complete Halo 2 on Legendary....

Hehe but I won't get points for that. wink

Maybe I'll move back to Ghost Rec. Avd. War. and work on the 10,000 kills in multiplayer achievement. big_smile

The church...ah yes point E I think it was. The endless stream does slow once you get next to it. Crouch run to the half wall and then drop to your belly. Take out any Jerrys that are in the way of getting near the church's outer wall. Once there cover one of the many entrances. Throw nades...a lot of them. Don't go into the church until your buddies do.

The 3 areas I really got hung up on:
1) The first tank in the Russian camp. I can't say how long I chased that thing around and around.
2) The Brit truck chase that I posted earlier.
3) The Brits defending the farm house from counter attack. At the end a tank rolls in and you have to go out and sticky bomb it. I was so out of position when the tank came that it took two nights to find a way to get to it.

I loved the barn. I found earlier in the game (the level where you're asked to cover your sector with a '42) that you just hold the fire down and spray everything.

I had anticipated Hill 400 to be a real pain. That didn't happen.

Re: Call of Duty 2 Freakin' Rocks

Did you find the hidden scoped 43 on the way up Hill 400? You have to blow down a door to get it.

A ten-shot semi-auto sniper rifle! Very fun. I really hated that I couldn't keep it to use on those mortar teams!

Oh yeah! Hidden behind door number 2 on the first bunker. Funny thing you can't pick up non scoped G43 ammo for it. confused
You'd think G43 ammo is all the same. wink
