Re: DVD purchases
DeepDiscountDVD is an online DVD store. Their regular prices are pretty good all year round, and they price-match if you ask them to. But the best thing is twice a year, they run a hush-hush promotion where everything they sell is marked down an additional 20%. The sale usually runs in June and November for about 8-10 days. The current sale ends this Saturday (17 June) at midnight Central Standard Time.
As for the first question, since I have a mortgage to pay off and two kids to support, I have to curtail my natural proclivity for buying stuff. So I limit myself to these sales so I don't go crazy throughout the year. Granted, my taste in films is very picky, so I don't buy every movie that comes out on DVD, but there's still stuff out there that I would buy if I had the disposable income to do so. Being a grown-up is hard.

I own very few DVDs- I prefer to rent. But I picked up Napoleon Dynamite for my dad for father's day.
That's one DVD I'm glad I didn't buy. It generates about as much as excitement as reflected in Napoleon's expression.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of the movie myself. I saw it in the theater and it was pretty much, "meh". But my dad likes making fun of nerds, so he's entertained by it.
Well, if I could I would refund your money.

I think the last movie I purchase was Stuart Little 3. She said she wanted Chicken Little but it doesn't matter, anyway. Most of the time she just wants to watch the six minute Pink Panther cartoons.

Ah! My Goddess OAV Collectors edition.
Actually, it was part of the Divine Ascention trade up promotion that AnimEigo is offering. If you have the original version of the OAV (the 2 separate dvds), you send those in with the dvd coversheet and the form from their website. Total cost was $15 if you had both, or $20 if you had one.
So I got it for half price.

DVD Empire is a good place to go as well. SO and I shop there for our anime when Best Buy doesn't have/carry what we are looking for. We tend to do a lot of shopping around before committing to a price. They also offer free shipping on orders of 3 or more. Yes it is slow, usually media mail, but we've gotten our items sometimes 2-3 days after the order is placed. I think it has a lot to do with the fact they're headquartered out of Chicago.
SO and I are getting a house as well, so we've been holding off on a lot of anime purchases until September (extra paycheck month).

Re: DVD purchases
A question for those with large DVD collections: On average, how often do you actually watch each of the movies you own?

I think the last one I bought was DS9, Season 2 - it was a very good price.

At least 3 - 4 times, maybe even more depending on the movie.

Re: DVD purchases
So far, I'm sure I've watched everything I own at least twice. The stuff I can play within earshot of the kids (i.e., not too much profanity, loud gunshots, etc.) has been watched a lot more for obvious reasons. If I know I'll be the only one in the house (which isn't too often), I'll pop in one of the films that take advantage of surround sound and whatnot (i.e., Lord of the Rings).
That's one of, if not the biggest, criteria I use when purchasing a DVD: replay value. If it's not a top-notch film, it's not worth buying.

Re: DVD purchases
I bought 6 classic DVDs and one Led Zeppelin DVD. The problem is that for some bizarre reason the classic DVDs are for the USA region. I did not realise till I tried to watch my LZ DVD that is for Japan/South Africa/England region. How can I watch my DVDs region free? I know that it is easy with a PC, but not a Mac

I doubt those particular movies would cost that much used. I paid $7 for the Ghostbuster set new about a year ago.
