Our "holiday party" at work
It keeps getting earlier and earlier every year. I'm guessing that's to cut costs. It's more the closer you get to Christmas. Anyway, every 5 years we have a big party. Usually up in the city (SF). This is our 25th. It's going to be big. Anyway, every year, a hotel ( i don't know how they choose one) offers us a "special room rate" because a lot of people don't want to have to drive home after drinking all night. The hotel of choice this year is the Hyatt. The special room rate is $228++. WTF?? What kind of a special rate is that? It's just a room. Most will just sleep there for a few hours and check out.
I hope they provide busses again this year because i'm not driving up and back for that party, and i can't afford to stay up there, especially at the Hyatt.

Re: Our "holiday party" at work
that actually s a bit off the normal rate for them, I just checked and they average at 275 a night. But hey if you don't plan on getting wasted why bother with the room

Re: Our "holiday party" at work
My husband's company's parties have steadily gone downhill to where all they have now is a "catered" lunch for only the employees, no spouses or families invited during the work week two weeks before Christmas. The sandwich trays from the local grocery store and canned sodas are the selection available.
What really upset me was that this past year, the high-ups had a "conference" in Hawaii, the top sales staff had a "conference" in Cozmel, and the same week that those were going on, they closed 5 offices that I know of, laying hundreds of people off. Those hundreds of people have families to feed, and could have worked a bit longer but instead of having local "catered" conferences that seem to be acceptable to the rest of the work force, they took the money and went to resorts.
I was infuriated.
I'm sorry that the Hyatt's so expensive. Can you chip in with others and share?

You get booze at a company party and are complaining?

Sorry, that was needed. It's for your own good. You'll thank me later.

Thisis why they are called MANAGEMENT and not LEADERS.
It has been my experience that most companies' management couldn't lead a diarreaha ward to a latrine. It is also the cause of the cynicism that most workers have toward management. It think it is eptiomized by Ken Lay clearing out a million dollar loan account that Enron established for him, so he could pay off his mortgage, just before weeks or days before Enron imploded.

our company is the exact same way. it used to be a catered affair at a nice restaurant. Now it is food from the deli set up on the binding machine. We get a 2 hour window at the end of the day to "party". It is at the point where most people say would rather just get the 7.95/person in cash and not have to pretend how great the party is, plus we can go home 2 hours earlier.

I'm not going to be staying in the city. Like i said, i hope they provide busses for us again this time.
We're still waiting to hear who the entertainment is going to be this year. Every 5 years, they go all out. 5 years ago, it was Jay Leno. He was pretty cool. A real nice guy. We've heard rumors it'll be a musical guest this time.
As for those catered parties mentioned above ... we have those at work (on site) 4 times a year. Free finger food and beverages, including crappy beer and champagne. It's just a way to let everyone know what's going on with the company on a quarterly basis.

My wifes's company did something similar for those in sales that made their quotas. Those that made it made it to "Inner Circle" (that is what it is called) went on a somewhat local (no more than 4 hours away) weekend destination; my wife, myself, and our two children met other lucky employees and management. It was always at a very well to do Inn. (The Chatham Bars Inn [Cape Cod] is one place we stayed for a weekeknd, for example - breakfast was over $50 for the two of us). The trip included a massage, 18 holes of golf, three lavish meals a day which didn't include the cocktail party, and all the roomservice and alcohol one could consume.
No More though, cost cutting you know. Now you get some sort of bonus or something lame.

I love being rewarded by going on a party with the people I really don't like, like managment.

So just make sure you drink 230$ worth of liquor, and you're ahead of the game even if you do stay at the hotel!

Sheesh, does anyone give out bonuses anymore? My last job wouldn't even give out a free t-shirt or hat if they had too many. The CFO wanted you to pay for them if you wanted one.

Re: Our "holiday party" at work
Is it possible to get a room at a cheaper rate at another local hotel the night of the party and have a friend or even a taxi take you to the other hotel after the party?

It isn't that big of a deal. I was more pissed off after i read the memo. I'm not staying the night. I'm not sharing a room with coworkers i can barely stand to be around at work. We will be taking the charter busses up to the city, assuming they provide them.
I'm mostly pissed that they chose to go to the Hyatt and the best deal we can get is $228 for employees, just to sleep off a drunk. Sorry, but no room is worth that much money for that little time.

You've got that right.
It's no party if you have to travel out of your way to be with people you can't stand and they're drunk as skunks.

Yeah, you have the meat of it. If they were your friends it would be different. So in the words of Foul ole Ron, this sums it up. "Millenium shrimp. Buggerit."

at one of my former jobs, the company wouldn't let us bring sig. others to the party and then made us buy drinks. (um, we do that informally all year; it's called "meeting at a bar after work" and sig. others are cheerfully welcomed.) holiday spirit dripped from the walls at that place, lemme tell you.
Hey, Justine, i live in the city. Should i open my house to your coworkers for the low, low rate of $200? Or $150 to crash in the garage?

Or even $100 to pitch a tent on your front lawn. Bathroom privleges are extra.
That's a heckuva idea for the next time a race comes to town.

Because it's a huge formal party. The one chance a year i have to get dressed up. And this one is a big one. The entertainment is rumored to be a musical guest, but they've been unusually tight lipped about this. Every 5 years it's a really good one. 5 years ago, a drunken me asked Jay Leno if i could take a picture with him. He obliged, but his security people didn't like it. I got the picture, though!
