One of my favorite restaurants is a local Thai place where the owner often comes round the tables to chat with customers.  Once she told us this story about a woman who absolutely demanded that her dish be prepared "authentically hot" and went on and on about how it better actually be spicy, etc.  So, the dish was prepared as ordered, and of course it was too spicy for the customer to eat.  The customer then demanded that the dish be sent back and replaced with a new one.  The owner told her that she'd have to pay for both meals, which of course infuriated the customer.  "You ordered it!  You pay for it!"  The customer did pay, but of course screamed about how she was never coming back.  "Good!  I don't want customers like you!"  Ha!  I love that place.

There's nothing wrong with firing some of your customers.  My wife works at a Pizza place, and this one customer complained about their pizza every time.  It was too cold, wrong topping, bug in the pizza, to little cheese, too much cheese.  Every complaint involves not only making a free pizza, but taking the time of a driver to run it out there.  After the 4th or 5th time, the owner wised up and figured they were just scamming him to get free food, so the next time, he took the call, and politely told them that they no longer want their "business".  Such a move will actually save him money.

In consulting, the old addage is that you should fire the bottom 10% of your customers from time to time, because it is actually costing you money to serve them.

Re: Read the menu or just ask

I don't drink a lot. I'm trying to get pregnant. The place where I work makes me mix the drinks, not the bartender. I gave someone a drink and said verbatim "These are on me. I'm trying to learn how to make this new shot. Tell me what's wrong, if anything, with it." They drank it, then complained to the bartender that they didn't like the way I mixed the drinks.  I just wanted to smack both guys. For crying out smurf's!!! They were FREE! All you had to do was sip and say "Sue, something's not right." I'd have been glad to handle the complaint, since I set myself up for it. I wanted to know what was wrong so I could fix it. Bah! At least it was just cheap vodka, not expensive stuff.

Nothing's easier than dropping a friend. Especially down a well.

Whenever I hear "horror stories" about what wait staffs will do to people's food, I always try to remember that most, if not all of the time, it's deserved. I feel for y'all in the service industry. People suck.

I hate onion. I don't understand why everything has to come with onion. It is just so popular that it is almost never listed on menus. Onion makes me puke. Some people just dont understand and say just eat it, but if I even get a taste of it I yak all over the place. Any even when you take it off, the taste is so stong that it leeches into the food.

When I was 17 a guy at work stuck a raw hot dog in his ass, then cooked it, then dropped it and then served it to a rather rude cutomer we had. That taught me to only complain after getting the food. big_smile

You shoulda reported him, and he shoulda been arrested! There is no reason, no matter how rude a person is to actually put someones health/life at risk. There is seriously something wrong with someone that does something like that, and those that allow it to happen.

I fully understand that, not being fond of onions myself. If I were your server and  you mentioned that upfront I would help steer you clear of all onion related items. Of course if you wait till your food comes out then I get pissed.

Don't worry. He got his. He was a real jerk. All we had to do was keep asking him what he thought of his coworkers and he put his foot in his mouth so much that when the Owner overheard him speaking smack about him, the guy was canned like ham. Before then, he had the owner fooled. Him and the owner were like best buds, until he heard the crap the manager was spewing. LOL. He did it to himeself in th end.

EDIT:  think I overheard him saying something about moving to the Bay Area after he was fired.

Re: Read the menu or just ask

When I was a waiter, I would always fight the urge to blame the customer for a mistake, even if I was fairly certain it was their fault.

Either way, you have to fix the problem.  I feel it's just best to do it.

...and I absolutely HATE when a service worker blames me (or someone I'm with) for a problem when I'm certain that the mistake was not my own.

Re: Read the menu or just ask

if it's my mistake then I correct it, apologize and try to get them s free dessert to make up for it.
I never said I blame anyone for my error.  I Simply said it is annoying as hell when someone doesn't read the menu orders something and then gets annoyed at the fact that it came out exactly as they asked. As an example I had a parent order some wings for their kid. Our wings come in a variety of spiciness from mild to so hot you don't want to ask. That is exactly how it is worded in the menu. When they ordered the hottest one i checked if they really wanted them that hot. Oh absolutely was the answer. Of course after one bite they call me over complaining that they are too hot and to remake them milder. Which I did without question. but I was still pissed about it. Never in front of the guest but still pissed.

Re: Read the menu or just ask

Flip side issue. Several times I've been served something I didn't order. For example, I ordered a chicken dish at a fancy over-priced restaurant and they gave me fish. I NEVER order fish, NEVER!!!! I accepted it, anyway because we were with my in-laws and they would have made a big deal out of. The waiter watched me take the first bite, then, when I didn't say anything, he sneered at me like, "Yeah, I knew you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between chicken and fish!" I wanted to throw the plate at him. He KNEW the order was wrong! I figured they didn't have something that the chicken dish needed so they substituted the fish.

Another time, I called in an order at a fairly nice restaurant. Picked it up, took it home and it had been made with the wrong kind of pasta, bow tie pasta. I really dislike bow tie pasta! It's like getting a mouth full of glue. Instead of calling them, or taking it back, I just picked out the bow tie pasta.

What should I have done? Guess I should have spoken up both times, but the hassle just didn't seem worth it. Both restaurants lost me as a customer forever!

Re: Read the menu or just ask

Some people actually believe that all of the food in a restraunt is pre-cooked and is just laying about waiting for someone to order it. Thier strategy is to order something slightly different than what the menu clearly states. They figure that thier meal will be more fresh and hot. Right. As mentioned above- things happen in a restraunt kitchen. And trust me this strategy will hold up your food for at least an additional 10 minutes, minimum. Possibly just for the f you factor.

The worst case I have ever seen involves an employee of a restraunt I worked at years ago. This man wasn't the brightest bulb in the box however he was the luckiest bastard I have ever met. We'll call him Chris. Chris had been an employee for years before I started and as far as I know is still working there. So, one of Chris' duties was to clean the raw beans we cooked everyday. This involves water and carefully sifting through the beans for any extra materials such as small pebbles. No big deal, after all beans are grown in dirt. Now here is where is get's interesting- one day Chris had his lunch- a bowl of beans and chili. While eating the beans and chili he bit into a pebble thereby chipping two teeth.  He sued. Chris was awarded $15,000.00 and settled.

Now I can understand if he didn't work there and wasn't part of the Family and all. Granted it was two teeth. But he was the ONLY person responsible for the beans in the first place! UFB! To this day I still can't get over it. Here was a guy that couldn't drive, couldn't add more than two numbers at a time- yet he apparently was an expert on laws. Unfortunately I have met many of these people since- I just get away as fast as possible before they figure out how thier going to sue me.

Well, Davic3, if it is any comfort, seeing your responses in this thread and your general attitude, you seem like an excellent service professional.  I wouldn't let people get you down.  I work in a service business too - engineering consulting, and it is very easy after a bad day to just conclude the people suck.  But then a few days go by and something really neat will happen and it erases all those sucky interactions.  If someone wants to, it's really easy for someone to make your day suck, but it takes a special kind of talent to draw out the best in someone.

Re: Read the menu or just ask

I don't mind fixing problems that are our fault. I'll take the dish back to the kitchen and we'll replace it. The biggest problem comes in when someone won't give us back the dish to fix. They want it for free plus the meal they're paying for. If you had take out and you call back to say "I ordered Honey BBQ wings, these are Hot." I'll tell you to bring the wings back so I can see. When people bring the box of bones back, obviously the wings weren't so displeasing that you require a refund or free food afterall. Why should we give it to you?
Now, if you present me a box with maybe 1-2 wings gone and I can see that it was the wrong flavor, I will more than happily dispose of the wrong wings and replace them with freshly made, correctly flavored ones.
