If anyone is interested (yeah, I know, obscure subject), I just posted a tutorial on creating alien/ancient/fantasy alphabets, symbols, etc. I used Photoshop, but you could use Gimp, Illustrator, or any other graphics program really.

Discusses visual sentence structure, word flow, letter shape and more.

Applies to illustration, design, sci-fi modeling, cow branding, etc. Okay, not cow branding. Unless they're alien cows.
