Help! There are six men here tearing up my home!

Ever tried spending the day in your home while people work on it?  eek

We've been talking about geting central air put in for a long time now, and we just couldn't ever seem to justify the expense.  Sure, you get back out of it what you put into it when you resell - hell, it's getting to the point that you can't even sell a house around here if it doesn't have central air - but we didn't have the money for it at the time.

Not that we do now, but my heater died with the winter.  Good timing, I suppose, but we still needed to do something about it.

So why not kill two birds with one stone?

They're putting it in today... but in the process they're tearing the place apart.  I'm sure it will be worth it in the end.  Right now?

Re: Help! There are six men here tearing up my home!

Way back when (first job!) I used to work the overnight shift (aka graveyard).  Anyway, my parents decide they needed to have vinyl siding done.

I didn't get to sleep for days.

Re: Help! There are six men here tearing up my home!

It took me 4 or 5 months to completely re-wire my entire house.

I lived there the whole time. Eventually I had only one working electrical outlet in the whole place. I ran orange heavy-duty extension cords wherever I had to have power. I had a battery-powered light in the bathroom.

Good thing I'm single.

whaa That's one of my next projects. whaa

On that front, it's fortunate that my house isn't all that big.  I can do it in sections and I'm really good friends with an electrician who swore up and down yesterday that if there's ever ANYTHING he can do for me he owes me a huge favor for filming (6 hours of video to edit in iMovie) and taking pictures of (over 500 pictures to touch up - that's more than I have of MY wedding!) his friend's wedding yesterday.  smile

Re: Help! There are six men here tearing up my home!

It really helps to have a licensed electrician to help plan the job and do the final hook up (I did all of the cutting of holes and wire-pulling). The city inspectors will go a lot easier on you if they know you have an electrician participating in the project. You might want him to get the permits for you.

Both photos AND video of a wedding? Hell, even after the wiring job, he's STILL gonna owe you!

Be glad you're there while they're working. Keep an eye on them. They tend to do everything the way that suits them not the way you want it. So make sure to steer them where necessary.

Nothing is worse than a kitchen remodel, IMHO.  Having been through 2, I can safely say, I'm done.

I can definitely feel your pain though.  They had to come back at one point and tear up the marble floor.  Dust went EVERYWHERE.  Took weeks to get it all cleaned up (and we even had a hired person at the time).

Re: Help! There are six men here tearing up my home!

I decided back in April while my husband had to travel for three weeks that I'd re-do the master bathroom. Between working full time in the evenings and taking care of my toddler all day, I only got time late, late at night (3 am) or the 1.5 hours my son napped during the day.
It's still not finished....*sigh*

Yep, last week some people came by to install a new air conditioner in my home. I asked if it would take them long (since I was up all night and incredibly tired), and they said no. It took them six hours to install the thing and clean up. What a horribly six hours that was, trying to stay awake by any means possible.

With my best friend at my side,
I face the new day in full stride.
I don't know what the future holds,
But I'll be waiting, proud and bold.

Oatmeal: is the job completeed, or do they still have to put things back together? If it's done, how do you like it?

we just got central air. It took about a day, no ripping anything up, and it's REALLY NICE! You'll enjoy it when it's done.

They got a lot done on Monday, but Tuesday was July 4, so they didn't work.  They're finishing up today.

Tomorrow, set the dial for 65 and marvel at the winter.

Re: Help! There are six men here tearing up my home!

Well, they finished up at around 3.  I've been doing quite a bit of follow-up work since then.  I've sheetrocked and plastered four former vents, I've cut out large chunks of sheetrock around a further two.  Those two we'll decide what to do with soon: sheetrock & plaster, or take down the rest of the wall.

I've removed about six to eight feet of old ductwork from the attic, plastered over quite a few holes left behind by the workers and some that I had around here before ( blush ), and in the process of doing all this I had the pleasure to completely and totally surprise my wife: she had no idea that I knew how to do any of this.  big_smile

Yay!

Doesn't your wife know men are born handy? big_smile

Oh, and does this mean your going to be around for a while, or are you taking off again?

Re: Help! There are six men here tearing up my home!

Hi again.  They're gone, but we're still working on the house.

The kitchen is now orange, the walls and ceilings around the rest of the house are soon to be painted, and I'm really getting tired of doing all this work here.  I'd like to sit down and watch a movie, play a video game, SOMETHING... but everything is overturned and away from the walls.

Ah, well. It's good to know that I can do it.  smile

Invite all your good friends for a house construction and painting party.   Get it over quick and then have a ton of pizza, Thai takeout,  BBQ  and Krueger Beer.

Re: Help! There are six men here tearing up my home!

They would have to be really good, competent friends.

I know people that I really like that I wouldn't let near my walls with a paint brush.
