The Apple Stigmata?
Every time I see a Mac (or iPod) in the newspaper, online or on the TV, the Apple symbol is purposely obscured, covered, replaced with a Dell logo or erased entirely. However, Dell, Google, HP, MS, Sony and everyone else's logos or names are always left clear! Is the Apple logo too conspicuous? Does the Apple logo carry some stigmata? Is there some conspiracy afoot? Do pigs fly? (Insert Zim quote here) Will people make the connection to Apple computers from the logo over the text of Dell or Sony? Is this unethical/illegal? Is this product placement running amuck?

Apple doesn't want their logo shown because either they don't want to pay for it to be shown or they don't want to be connected to that show/product.

I've never seen this done on an iPod, or with another company's logo put on instead, but whenever I see an iBook/PowerBook in a tv show, it has a stupid looking sticker over the glowing apple logo. Except on some fox shows like 24.

Some do a good editing where the back looks like a solid color.
It's a paradox of how sharply dull I am.

Actually, I understand it's the opposite: the show's producers (or network) don't want to display such a prominent product logo if they're not going to be paid by Apple to do so.
Typically, Apple's computers are the most visually appealing, which is why they often find themselves into TV shows, movies, and ads. (Not to mention the creative departments tasked with prop selection and/or set decoration are most likely using Macs to begin with.)
I posted a couple of threads on the subject of "Mac subterfuge" over the past few years. It's always interesting to see what's intentional and what's not when it comes to Mac product placement.

Removing the Apple logo from a computer may have the desired effect, but not so with an iPod. The iPod is just as good as an Apple logo.

Re: The Apple Stigmata?
I actually wish Apple offered an option to have a toned-down logo. I want to use an Apple notebook at work, in a mostly Dell shop (and I'm the Network Admin!) I can't do it right now, though, because everyone would instantly know and wonder why THEY can't have one. So, I'm still stuck on a crappy Dell at work.

Re: The Apple Stigmata?
A McDonalds ad had a Dell looking circle over the Apple symbols. I have also seen iMacs with Dell drapped across the front of them where the logo should be.
The design of the product deserves to have it's branding on there. Removing it rather than obscuring it has got to be close to defamation. It's like covering up someone's signature on a work of art!
My next question is how is the Apple logo so prominent? The Nike symbol or Dell or Sony draped across the products are easier to connect with. Why are they singling out the Macs?
Edit: When people ask for me to install Microsoft iTunes for their iPod to work. Or refer to their iPod, iMean Creative player, the market presence certainly ain't there. Or maybe these students are just dumb marketing lemmings...

It seems to me that Apple could take legal issue with someone slapping a Dell logo over what is an obvious Apple product in a product placement spot.

Re: The Apple Stigmata?
The show "Bones" shows the words "iMac" and the Apple logo all the time. I have no idea if Apple actually pays for it or not, but it is definitely there in almost every episode.
Every other show I have ever seen with an Apple product has the logo covered up somehow.

Which is perfectly accurate.
I've never seen the Apple logo replaced with another companies' logo, but I have seen this same phenomenon with computers that are obviously some other brand. More often than not they simply place a plant or desk lamp or something so that they are right between the logo and the camera, the cheap bastids.

Re: The Apple Stigmata?
Doesn't most of this have to do with the fact that Apple's brand is undeniably noticable with or without the logo? I mean, I always point out Apple computers in movies or shows. My point is if you see it, you now right away that it is an Apple. Kinda hard for PCs with the generic black plastic design.

Re: The Apple Stigmata?
Also, don't forget that there are plenty of advertisers who pay for airtime during a specific show. If Pepsi, for example, is paying money to have a spot aired during break from Show X, they probably don't want Apple getting free airtime within the show.
To my knowledge, it's perfectly acceptable to show a logo in a show or movie, as long as the product is shown properly. IE, you can have someone drink a Coca-Cola and enjoy it, while showing the logo, but you can't have them drink it and then fall over dead from the untainted product.
I also think there are different rules for different mediums. One thing for TV, one for movies, another for print, etc.

This sounds like much to do about nothing. The film / advertising industry is littered with Mac users. It shouldn't be a surprise to see Macs cameo in commercials.
That said, if you're not going to pay to have your brand advertised, it's going to get covered up.

We saw The Devil Wears Prada this weekend, and apparently The Devil Uses Macs as well. Lots of Macs.
What was funny was towards the beginning, Emily minimized a window into the dock. The audience sort of gasped/laughed, like it was one of those snobbish haute couture tricks, instead of 'just the way it works'. Meh. PC users.

Re: The Apple Stigmata?
Shouldn't it be stigma, the singular form of the word rather than the plural form stigmata?
I particularly point this out since most people associate the singular form with a stain or tarnish on one's reputation and the plural form with the crucifixion marks of Jesus despite the words having the same actual meanings.

Sounds like my friends. I minimize something; "Hey, do that again!"

I call my Dell DJ an iPod sometimes...WAIT! don't kill me just yet. It is easier to call it an iPod, because then people will know that it is a large capacity MP3 player. Soon I will be able to legitimately call my MP3 player an iPod, 'cause I'm getting one with my MacBook tomorrow. So excited!

On Designer Challenge (HDTV) the designer whips out her PowerBook all the time. I just don't think they care about giving Apple the free advertising as it's a small market show.

I always thought it was funny whenever Genevieve on Trading Spaces would start saying iBook, but stop halfway through and then say laptop whenever she would use her iBook on the show.
