Best place to transfer my domain?

My domain registration is up for renewal in 45 days.   I currently have my domain registered from www.DomainDirect.com, which wants $53 for two years.   My website is hosted elsewhere, on HostGator.com

I'm looking to save some money this time around.

I'm looking at registering the domain with either GoDaddy.com or HostWay.com.    Any experiences you've had with these?   Both are offering domains for about $7/year, which is about a third what I'm paying now.  Is there anything better out there?

Help?

Personally, I've had no experience with HostWay.com, but $53 is waayyy too much for a domain name.  Go with GoDaddy and you won't be disappointed.

Re: Best place to transfer my domain?

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll switch to GoDaddy tonight.

I used Domain Direct for the past four years... at first it was great because I used it for my emails and URL forwarding.   But now that I have hosting elsewhere, I don't need anything but the basics.

Question---GoDaddy is offering free email at my domain... would this potentially conflict with my email services from my Host?   I suspect not, since DomainDirect also offered email which I was able to bypass.

Re: Best place to transfer my domain?

Don't use GoDaddy. I'd used them for a few years, and their domain management interface is heinous, their change process is laborious, and their checkout/registration process is borderline criminal in how they try to trick you into buying unnecessary extras. I can't un-recommend them enough.

Instead, NameCheap is a dream. On the outset, they sort of look similar to other registrars; their interface doesn't appear terrific, and it looks just as salesy as the others. But the entire process, from registration to management, becomes a thing of beauty in practice. It's fast, efficient, non-spammy... I honestly can't imagine why you wouldn't want to use them.

I cannot say enough: GoDaddy is a piece of ass, and not the good kind.

I like 1&1.  Their control panel is a little confusing, but the price is right, and they provide free private domain registration and DNS management.

Re: Best place to transfer my domain?

Btw guys (OT), how does the 60 day policy works? Is it you can't transfer within 60 days of new registration or both 60 days after new registration & transfer?

Re: Best place to transfer my domain?

1&1 does have good pricing, but the confusion of the control panel turns me too far off. I find it incredibly clunky: loads slowly, uses unnecessary "menu" drop-downs, etc. They've got nice features, and we've never had outages with them (my brother hosts all his sites there), but NameCheap certainly has the interface/usability advantage.

GoDaddy is such a piece of crap.  Sure, it's cheap, but they're about the most difficult to use, most laden with advertising, and most likely to decide to screw you because they figure they can make a few extra bucks.

Forgot to mention: NameCheap is offering free WhoIs Guard (private domain registration) for "a limited time", which has translated into "a long time". The only confusing thing is that it isn't added automatically; you have to find and apply it afterwards in the admin.

But seriously, it rocks.

The lack of control over Mail server settings, etc. forced me to make a switch from 1&1 to GoDaddy. Besides, 1&1 does "domain kiting." sad

No, they allow you to point your domain's MX record to an external mail server. They're okay I guess. What's domain kiting?

Re: Best place to transfer my domain?

I love 1&1. For 6 bucks per domain, I can put up with a slightly annoying control panel for those rare instances where I have to change the DNS and such.

Re: Best place to transfer my domain?

I'm currently stuck with Hostway. They're cheap, fairly reliable, but their control panel is kinda weak. I'm eventually going to move all my domains to namecheap.com -- they have better options and a better interface.

Re: Best place to transfer my domain?

a few years ago I transferred one of my domains to godaddy because they were cheap (and because I wanted to see if their domain services were better than their hosting), and I do have to say that overall I'm impressed.  Then again, I nearly expected them to steal my domain.  It wasn't one I realy cared about anyway.

Sure, their checkout is horrible (make sure to double check everything!), and their control panel sucks, but really, how often do you change a domain name's settings.  They seem to have plenty of features and control if you dig for a bit as well, plus in my experience with them their support is great.

Godaddy isn't bad, and they're inexpensive, plus you have enough control to transfer away if you want.  Just don't go with them on hosting (I was inexperienced, it was a poor decision).  Of course, I seem to be the only person who doesn't mind godaddy (as muh as I hate their site, they aren't that bad.  Domains are what they're good at.)

That's basically been my experience with them as well.

Re: Best place to transfer my domain?

hmmm seems like the best bet is to find some one that can provide me with a dedicated server and do my own thing. I'm currently with Vizaweb - but over the last year I get the impression they are not doing well although everything has been working well, etc.

Now I'm hearing bad things about godaddy and 1&1 - so I'm not sure what to do exactly. ev1servers.net in Houston ripped me off for a long time before I realized what was going on.

Seems like there is no hope of a good hosting service out there!

Re: Best place to transfer my domain?

I currently use GoDaddy for three of my sites, one being a business site.  Yes their user page is the utmost in confussion, but they have been reliable for me for five years, they have an excellent customer service, their reps are friendly, and helpful AND they are inexpensive.  I have never had a problem with my sites on Go Daddy.
