Lady Liberty finds Jesus

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2006/07/04/us/05liberty.1901.jpg

On Independence Day, Lady Liberty was born again.

As the congregation of the World Overcomers Outreach Ministries Church looked on and its pastor, Apostle Alton R. Williams, presided, a brown shroud much like a burqa was pulled away to reveal a giant statue of the Lady, but with the Ten Commandments under one arm and "Jehovah" inscribed on her crown.

And in place of a torch, she held aloft a large gold cross, as if to ward off the pawnshops, the car dealerships and the discount furniture outlets at the busy corner of Kirby Parkway and Winchester that is her home. A single tear graced her cheek.

It was not clear if she was crying because of her new home, her new identity as a symbol of religion or, as the pastor said, America's increasing godlessness. But although big cheers went up from the few hundred onlookers at the unveiling, and some people even wore foam Lady Liberty crowns bearing Christian slogans, she was not universally welcomed.

I'm not a Christian, but I'm embarrassed on their behalf when "megachurches" partake in crazy-ass nonsense like raping the Statue of Liberty in the name of Jesus. Not only does this constitute idol worship, but the money spent on building this monstrosity -- donations from the congregation -- would have been better suited for outreach programs. Think of all the good things that could have been done with a smooth quarter-million, especially in economically depressed areas like neighborhood this thing was erected. If I lived there, this gold-plated piece of trash would be a constant slap in the face.

Furthermore, it makes a mockery of the spirit of the original Statue of Liberty by pissing all over the millions of Jewish and Muslim immigrants that have made the United States their home. Lady Liberty is one of the original icons of acceptance and diversity, and these yokels have turned her into a symbol of exclusion and judgement. Simply ugly.

Typical knee-jerk liberal, anti-christian response.

Idolatry in the 1st degree. The Goddess of Liberty is laughing. To be co-opted by fundamentalists Christians is a hoot.

As good as saying God died and rose on the third day.

I wonder if these people ever notice how they keep sliding into the myths of the Norse and Greeks.

Pfft. Their dime. If they want a statue like that and actually pay for it, power to them, I say.

Maybe there will be miniature ones at garage sales someday.

Re: Lady Liberty finds Jesus

That's awesome.

Why shouldn't the church expand its fetishes and co-opt secular ones?

It falls in line with inscriptions on money, public service oaths, the so-called 'sacredness' of marriage, swearing on bibles, ten commandments in courthouses, creationism in schools, etc.

This is just one more judeo-christian emphasis on public life and public myths.

I like it because it's an unambiguous and explicit union of the concept of liberty and the acceptance of Christ in the context of the American experience. I like to see political movements put aside subtlety so people where they stand.  More rope.

Pastor Alton R. Williams of World Overcomers Outreach Ministries Church faced the 72-foot statue and blessed the city of Memphis against disease, crime, intolerance and poverty.

Looks more like Lady Liberty is trying to keep Jesus out. "See this, Jesus? You wanna get nailed again? Stay the hell away!"

But meh, their statue, their dime. They didn't stick a cross in the hand of the real one, so what's the big deal?

Breaking News!

A black Southern church does something really tacky!

I'm not meaning to be racist, it's just something that I've seen a LOT of here.

Re: Lady Liberty finds Jesus

Force the images together whether they make any sence together or not.

My brother died in flood. At a commemorative ceremony several years later one speaker tried to adapt the Gettysburg Address as a memorial to those who died in that flood.

Bad, bad idea. These strike me the same way. Make me uncomfortable with images and symbols that aren't related to each other.

As for God being the foundation of this nation, the colonies that were placed here and were religious based, were the most intolerant, bigoted, and hateful institutions on these shores. Rhode Island was the one colony that wasn't. It's orginal charter/constitution is what is echoed in the Contstitution of the U.S.

Religion has a tendency to become something much lesser than it could be in morality and ethical behavior. The problem is we keep getting very shallow thinkers and egoists in positions of power in the churches.

You wouldn't have a problem if an Islamic group made a Lady Liberty in a burqa holding an Islamic Cresent ?

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."  They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

How does that comment even relate to what he said?  He said it was "stupid," though he didn't identify it as not being "artwork."

Similarly, where did Pithecanthropus identify or defend 'piss christ' as "artwork?"  Why are you laying that distinction upon him?

This actually looks more like a mock-up of something that someone would make if they were to criticize fundamentalist christianity. Like on the cover of a hard-core atheist magazine or whatnot.

Evidently it isn't a hoax. It looks more to me like the good pastor has an ego the size of his statue.
