iMac and iBook - To buy or to wait?

Well, my Dad was about to go out and buy me a 20" iMac and a 2GHz iBook (Didn't decide on black or white yet, leaning towards white though).

Then my Uncle said to my Dad, "Maybe you should wait till next year, when a newer one comes out, so she can have the latest one when she starts school (I'm changing schools)".

Now, I'm wondering if there's a new iMac coming out before or around the start of 2007?

If not, or even if so, should I wait, or buy now and finally rid myself from this PC?

Thanks in advance. smile

Re: iMac and iBook - To buy or to wait?

Same thing I tell everybody... A computer you need now is no good to you in 6 or 12 months.

If you have a need for a new mac.... go ahead and buy it.... as it will still be just as good next year. smile

If you CAN indeed afford to wait, then wait... but remember... you can wait 10 years and there will still always be a better model "just around the corner".

My short answer would be...just buy it now. up

Re: iMac and iBook - To buy or to wait?

The Core 2 Duo [(Merom) is] supposed to be released by Intel on August 22, 2006, so I would assume/hope that nearing 2007 Apple would have updated [the MacBook Pros (maybe the MacBook)] line with them.  (Maybe something will be announced at WWDC...)

Maybe you can buy the iBook now and the iMac later. Or the other way round. I couldn't remember which one updated recently.

It's a MacBook, not an iBook.  Yes, I know the original poster messed up, but it's obvious [she] is talking about the MacBook.  Yes, I'm anal-retentive enough where that bugged me, and I wanted to post about it.

There's still many plans for Apple in 2007, including the iPhone (maybe), Intel Xeon in MacBookPro's, And OS X 10.5. Why not wait for that, there's much more to come out in 2007.

No offense, but that better be some attempt at humor.  Because if you actually think that, you're either insane, ignorant, or both.

Were I you, Elizabeth, I'd just get a single computer—if you need portability, the laptop.  And six months won't make that huge of a difference in the computer you get.

Being anal myself, you're a month off from a Core 2 Duo.  Unless of course you meant Merom, which is rumored to go into a MacBook Pro, not an iMac.

I would wait for a new iMac personally with a Core 2 Duo, and if a MacBook was in my future, I would buy now.

Yes, you are correct.  I meant to say Merom and I was only talking about the MacBook. (At the time of the posting, I was hoping for it to go in the MacBook too, but current rumor reports have it only being in the MacBook Pro.)

Re: iMac and iBook - To buy or to wait?

if i needed a desktop machine, i'd go with the 17" imac as i have seen few reports of problems with them. not so of the 20 inch.
screen real estate is pretty good with the 17" unless you deal with applications that have 4 or more pallets...

if i needed a portable solution, i'd go with the macbook pro model. more expansion possibilities and fewer cosmetic issues than the macabook, plus, if you find you have the dough, the macbook pro can drive the most enormous external display apple sells at this time.

if i planned on doing significant video work, i'd go with the imac with 2 gigs o' ram.
if i planned on doing significant video work at disparate sites, i might choose the macbook pro with 7200 rpm drive and 2 gigs o' ram.

the macbook is a fine machine for doing basic stuff like word processing, spread sheets, email, creating presentations, calendar stuff, and surfing, but if you plan on doing these things in the bloatware known as Microsoft Office, then you will want 1 gig o' ram regardless of which machine you choose. even the mac mini will preform "okay" with a gig o' ram.

my 2 cents to ponder.

If you can wait 6 months do so. The MacBook and iMac will be up for a revision before then. esp the iMac.

And/or read the quote from her Uncle? tongue

Not knowing your specific needs I would probably lean towards getting the iMac after any WWDC announcements. I would then wait until just before going to your new school and get the MacBook. Or, go get a 17" MacBook Pro now and be done with it all?

Re: iMac and iBook - To buy or to wait?

I have found that having a desktop and portable is a pain in the neck. Why not get your self a nice macbook pro (same performance as imac) and a 20" LCD and same your self some money.

That way you will have all you data in one place and can just take it with you but have a nice big monitor when your at your desk. Just be sure to make backups!!!!

Yep, now that I've thought about this more, this sounds like the best plan.

• 17" MacBook Pro (after WWDC announcements, August 7-11)
• 160GB external harddrive for backing up data
• AppleCare Protection Plan
• 1GB added RAM for a total of 2GB (aftermarket, like from Crucial, not from Apple)

I don't feel the extra LCD is all that neccessary.

• 15.4" MacBook Pro, 2.16GHz C2D, 3GB RAM, 160GB HD,
OSX 10.4, connected via EV-DO modem.
• iPhone 8GB, 1st gen.
• iPod nano 2GB Silver, 2nd gen.

Trust me it's real nice having a big LCD and external keyboard and mouse when at a desk. I wont use any thing less then a 20" any more.
