Re: Civ IV Patch (Beta 1)

Today, I played a mod that used the SDK. How about that. shrug

(Actually, to be fair, most things can just be done 'normally' using the python system (which is cool) but it's still a shame that Mac users will likely never see the SDK.)

Re: Civ IV Patch (Beta 1)

Okay, I borrowed this game and installed it on my 1.5 Ghz G5 Powerbook, 1.5 GB of RAM, 128MB Radeon 9600 mobility.

It basically ran like ass. It was unplayable mostly because the graphics were EXTREMELY choppy, on the lowest settings. I'm glad I didn't buy this.

However, i'm strongly considering getting a new Mac (partially to play this, but mostly to encode videos faster) because the gameplay to me seemed to be better than Civ III. I wasn't able to explore all the facets, but it does seem that you have more control over production, slightly different types of units to produce, and new wonders, and new types of wonders, as well as some new types of units. On top of that, it seemed like the computers actually took a lot shorter to make their moves than in Civ III, but this may be because I only played on a small map, with 5 competitors, on the next-to-easiest level. If you are a Civ fan, I would highly recommend this game if you have a computer to run it. If you have a 1.5Ghz G4, unsurprisingly, this game is not for you.

So did you install the patch? I'd be interested in the performance before and after the patch.

Yeah, I installed the patch. The biggest thing with the patch is that my Powerbook's fan instead of constantly running, only ran 85% of the time, the intro videos actually played (before they were a slide show), and it seemed to speed up the computer's moves.

Re: Civ IV Patch (Beta 1)

Looks like the full patch is out now, coupla days ago. 3X bigger, too... CivFanatics Forums:

[UPDATE: July 29 2006] The full release of this patch is now released. To update your Civ4 to version 1.61 rev A go to the link below, download the file, mount the disk image and run the installer. The file size is 40 MB.

This is an official update for Civilization 4. It will fully update any previous version of Civilization 4 to version 1.61 Rev A. It is recommended for all users.

This update contains the following fixes:

- Better performance on certain Macs (particularly G5's) that exhibited excessive CPU use in the original release. The game should no longer run dual CPU's to 100% capacity.

- Fixed numerous sounds issues including missing sounds, stuttering, 3D sound positioning, and movie soundtracks.

- Fixed globe graphical corruption at Low quality setting.

- Fixed bugs exposed by having the "Big Blue Marble" mod installed in CustomAssets.

Known Issues

- If you experience kernel panics on Intel Macs, make sure you have installed the latest version of the OS X 10.4.7 Combo update. If problems persist, turn off FSAA options and/or run the game in a window.

Requirements

• Civilization IV

They have two file links. Give 'em a page hit for the effort, stay for the info 'n' stuff.

Re: Civ IV Patch (Beta 1)

I played on a 1.3 gig G4 macbook this weekend, and it actually was playable at the lowest settings.  I played on a small map so that helped.

I just updated my patch last night... and there were a couple bugs, but all in all it plays much better. I still want battle sounds.

Re: Civ IV Patch (Beta 1)

I tried out the new patch today, and for a small map, it's at least playable. The graphics are still extremely choppy (maybe 8-12 FPS on average), but it's noticeably better than it was before. I am going to try a large map later on (i have lots of work to finish now sad ).

Brad Oliver has written that 10.4.7 fixes the sound issues- it has a newer version of OpenAL which the patch also uses.

Re: Civ IV Patch (Beta 1)

I have 10.4.7.  I read that.  Others are having my problem as well.

Re: Civ IV Patch (Beta 1)

I just tried the demo on my Macbook--which I know is below spec, but others have gotten it to work.

The globe is black on mine. I see the interface, the mini-map, and the units; just not the terrain. It looks like the patch fixes "Fixed globe graphical corruption at Low quality setting." Which is what it defaults to on my system. If I set it to medium, it forces me to do a restart and then resets back to low.

Has anyone else run into this problem?
